Where do I start with this flooring

I have a bit of a 'doer upper', and I have started on this room (small utility area). The whole house has wooden flooring, but this is different and looks like it has been neglected. I don’t want to change it, but not sure whether it’s salvageable.

If that’s the original structural floorboards then they look really good, finish is poor but the wood is good quality. it’s hard to tell if it’s that or engineered laminate from the photo.

You’ll need a big sander- hss, but not looking to remove much (looks like varnish) so shouldn’t take too long. Messy as anything though. Good quality water based varnish, eg diamond glaze afterwards.

Thank you for your answer.

Definitely real wood, but a highly neglected room. Thinking my little hand sander won’t cut it?

No to hand sander, you’ll get a couple of hours in and look up to see how much is left and want to weep. Hire the industrial it’ll be done in a hour.

You might not need a big lawnmower size sander though.

FWIW I have done a room with a normal small diy type sander, it is possible, but it depends what and how much you have to remove. Hiring a bigger sander does make light work of it though, and not that expensive either.

Thank you! I might have a go with the hand sander and see how far I get. I feel more confident knowing that it’s doable.
