What size screws

I’ve recently moved into my new home and I have noticed a few walls where I would like to put shelving on - have some sort of metal backing behind the wall. So ‘normal’ sized screws go roughly halfway in before they stop.

I have been to DIY shops to try and find a solution but find either the screws I get are too thin and small (think more hanging nails) or not quite short enough.

Does anyone have any advice please and possibly links to what screws I could use please?

Thank you

are the walls plastered brick?

or plasterboard?

tell us more about this metal backing

I can only think of steel channel framing for drywall

or the foil backing

or a steel lintel above a window

or you live in a shipping container

or an old secure site that has tempest screening

Hi @PigletJohn
Thanks for asking. I have no idea honestly

I can only describe the walls as standard walls with a steel backing behind it. Sorry this is t much help

How does this steel backing make itself known?

Would pictures show it?
