lost building regs certificate

Can anyone advise me the easiest way of getting a copy of a building regs certificate for works carried out 20+ years ago? It's so long ago and although I've kept most important things, I seem to have lost this! I will attempt to call the Council but that never goes well... Any ideas gratefully received!

I'm sure it varies by council, but I found records online from at least 50 years ago on a council website.

My council told me that the files had all been sent to another area for storage and were inaccessable unless you paid a HEFTY fee. And my extension was only 15 years ago!

Some Councils have a portal where you can download documents.

Thanks all! I was able to download the planning permission details from the council site (records back to 1947 apparently) but there was zilch on building regs. I was mighty relieved to find the papers!
