Do people usually take their washing machines when they sell and move?

I inherited the seller's washing machine and it has just gasped its last breath. DH just bought a pretty expensive replacement. I was wondering if we are moving in the next few years, could we take the washing machine with us or would buyers expect it to be included? I remember there was a white goods list on what was included when I bought, and I actually thought at that time, that its normal for seller to include white goods...

Mine is coming with me in my coffin!! Shock it was expensive! Lol

cushioncovers · 15/02/2022 17:48

Yes very normal to take all your white goods with you unless prior arrangements are made with your buyers.

LoopyGremlin · 15/02/2022 18:06

I would take mine with me. It’s a Miele and I love it!

Starseeking · 15/02/2022 18:21

It depends on what you want to do. It's neither expected or unexpected to take it. The vendor needs to indicate on the fixtures and fittings form what they intend to do with anything that is not built in.

My last sale, my washing machine was only 3 years old, so I was happy to leave it if the buyers paid a couple of hundred pounds. They declined, so I took it to storage on completion.

On the recent purchase I was due to make, the vendor was happy to leave it, so I would have had 2 washing machines, had that transaction completed. I was planning to store my brought forward washing machine in the garage until the old one which came with the house died.

We were moving to a house with an integrated one, so we sold our last one with the flat for £150. It was a good machine and fairly new so seemed fair.

When we moved into the flat the previous owners had said they were taking theirs with them which was fine by us as we were gutting the kitchen. On move in day we discovered they had not only left the machine, they had left it with laundry still inside Envy

We thought about chasing them up about it but as we were gutting the place and had a skip coming anyway we got our lovely builders to deal with it. Hideous.

Whitefire · 15/02/2022 18:47

We left ours as it was integrated, we bought ours from the vendor. They were moving to a new build so I imagine there was an integrated one there.

ImInStealthMode · 15/02/2022 18:58

Up to you. When I bought my flat the vendor took his washing machine but left me the fridge-freezer. I also bought his couch.

We're looking to buy now and have seen some properties that have 'space for' and some that are newly refurbished with a washing machine integrated.

Hebeee · 15/02/2022 23:08

Unless integrated, take with you.

At our last house the vendor - who had already moved into his onward purchase - indicated he'd be leaving the (non-integrated) washing machine behind. Then, a short while later, via our solicitor we heard this was actually broken so he'd be giving us £300 for a replacement! As we were bringing our own from the house we were selling anyway we were delighted! The old one was taken away for free by a scrap metal dealer 😉

mytwocats · 15/02/2022 23:35

Leave in the included in sale list, otherwise just take it. When we moved into our second home all tv Ariel’s were gone, every light bulb, and I know of one house where all door handles were taken!! If on the list ok

RedToothBrush · 15/02/2022 23:44

Normal to take.

The only reason we did not with out last housemove was because we knew there was already a brand new one with the house.

Tbh i regret it as it was a better washer dryer, only a year old and we now have a washer and a dryer and could have done with the space.

purplecorkheart · 15/02/2022 23:45

Can be either normal to leave or take. Just make it clear when selling.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 15/02/2022 23:50

Depends where in the world you are. In Scotland you leave them. In England you take them. In Australia you take them. In Italy you leave them.

LittleBearPad · 15/02/2022 23:52

Totally up to you. Just be clear on the property info form from your solicitor what you’re doing.

frazzledasarock · 15/02/2022 23:59

We left ours.

Our seller took theirs.

mrsmacmc · 16/02/2022 00:01

Our first house the seller took theirs with them, we bought one then took it to second house and the sellers had left theirs. If we move we'll take ours as it's an expensive machine.

By negotiation is what usually happens.

2bazookas · 16/02/2022 00:02

Its entirely up to the seller. The sales brochure for the house should mention whether white goods, fitted carpets, curtains etc are going to be left or taken, and the estate agent should know too.

We took one from Scotland to England but if we moved again we would leave it as the one we have now is intergrated.

I've lived in 6 different houses in Italy and take my washer with me. As does everyone I've ever known.
LIZS · 16/02/2022 14:23

Always take it.

BasiliskStare · 16/02/2022 16:11

We specifically said ( non integrated ) appliances were to be left but as other shave said this needs to be very specifically said on the form which includes fixtures and fittings - otherwise you can take them. Quite normal to take with you I think.

BasiliskStare · 16/02/2022 16:11

OFFS have not shave Grin

noresponserequired · 16/02/2022 16:56

Hmm, mine is integrated, less than 12 months old and I pushed the boat out on it (£900) so I think I would take it with me if I moved within the 3 year guarantee period even though it is integrated.

pilates · 16/02/2022 17:03

I would take it.

Earlymorningcuppa · 16/02/2022 18:40

It is not recommended as the weight of the drum means that moving it causes damage. The drum arrives bolted down and you have to remove the bolts before using - if you can re-engage them then it might be worth it. Every house I have bought has come with a washing machine.
