If I can't pour white spirit down the drain...

What am I supposed to do with it?.

I've only used a tiny bit, in a jam jar, to clean some brushes. The bottle says it must not be disposed of in the drain, so if I can't pour it down the sink what do I do with it?

Is there something better I should have used instead?

blot it up, maybe, & place in general bin - what they prefer is to take larger amounts & paints to the council tip (not all of them do this)

My local recycling centre has a dangerous chemicals section.

If you aren't willing to take it to the council tip:

if it's a small amount, you can put a rag in the jar to soak it up, and leave it outdoors with the lif off, it will evaporate.

it will be a fire hazard until all gone

even then, the rag will be oily enough to start a bonfire or something. You have to soak it in water so it won't burn and put it in the bin.

If you are cleaning paint brushes of oil-based paint, you can use blue brush cleaner, which is a strong detergent.

Offer it free on a local FB page - someone else will want it.

Bloody hell. I know things are tight for a lot of people but do you seriously think someone will want to come and collect a half full jam jar of white spirit that has already been used to clean paint brushes?

sqirrelfriends · 14/02/2022 15:13

If you have a garden just leave the jar open for it to evaporate.

@Parpophone I think I've misread this - I thought she was referring to the bottle which is mostly full, not the little bit she's used!
