Painting and decorating quotes

We've just moved house and want 3 relatively small rooms painted with one wallpapered on 2 walls. Think 13 feet by 9 feet is the largest. I've had one quote which is just over 2k- but 660 of this is for materials. They sent a link to the colour chart and all the paint is 30 quid or so for 2.5L..so I'm not sure how much paint they're planning on using! I'm going to get some other quotes but what is the norm for P&D at the moment? We're in South Wales .

Does seeem a bit expensive. How much paint they'll need depends on how big the colour change is. But that dos seem rather a lot, even for really good paint. Some of the stuff I use (claypaint- for lime plaster walls) is about 80 quid for 5L. It covers in 2 coats when the colour change isn't massive. Other paints may be cheaper but take 3 coats. More if there is a big colour change. Are they doing ceilings as well?

Also- maybe there is stuff like filler in there as well. That can be pricey.
The stuff I use is about £6 for a smallish pot.

Wallpaper is a bit 'how long is a piece of string?'. £660 wouldn't go far with the sort of paper that was put up in Our Beloved Leader's flat. Grin

It might be that they're doing multiple base coats, and then two colour coats? Our decorators did this for our house, and the colour change was subtle. And they probably also included filler and wood paint for skirting, architrave etc.?

We are south wales.

Just found someone who is reasonable and good.

Pm me if you want details

Hmm the quote says "miscoat" whatever that is, then 2 coats emulsion. It is for woodwork too. The paint is crown, midrange maybe? The walls currently are papered apart from one which is a neutral colour anyway.

Thanks Vintage I'll pm you.

Are you sure they're a proper painter? Never met one that used crown paint, especially 2.5I tins.

A mistcoat is as it says really, a watered down base coat.

Usually only mistcoat bare new plaster. Perhaps they mean primer if the walls aren't great and need a lot of prep.

They should be getting trade prices on all the basic whites and a maximum of 10 litres of coloured emulsion per room. £660 seems a tad expensive.

That's what I thought..I've decorated (badly) myself so I know it doesn't cost 600 quid in materials to do 3 rooms where there isn't significant prep to do or using really high end paints. Back to the drawing board I think.

I'm in South Wales too, we recently had a small double bedroom prepped, mist coated, 2 x coats paint and the ceiling repainted for £230. (Although we did supply the colour for the walls so saved there). Based on that I'd say that quote you've got is on the high side, although are you supplying the wallpaper? That can be mega bucks and might need lining paper too.
