Window seat - whether to keep

We have recently bought a house with a window seat in the living room. It's a 1950s house and the window seat isn't really like the glamorous ones you see on pinterest, it is fairly basic.

The particular issue is that the window seat isn't actually comfortable to sit on, largely because the window sill digs into your back. Obviously cushions help but it's still not massively comfortable.

I guess I'm wondering firstly if we should consider actually removing the window seat, or if doing so would be a negative in terms of character. And secondly, if we keep it, how to make it more comfortable. We are replacing the window itself soon, and the sill is in poor condition so we'll replace that at the same time, but any sill would have the same issue really.

You need the sill to be flush with the wall, that would immediately eliminate the discomfort.

But I'd only keep it if you've got a view worth sitting in the window for.

Pinterest is your friend op.. Keep it. Do it up.

It's not an original feature so I'd get rid, I think but would dither for ages about it as well. More space with a comfortable armchair would be better.

It's at the front of the house so doesn't particularly have a nice view - just the front garden and street.

Would it look kind of weird if the sill was flush?

A window seat is on my 'must have' list for the next property I buy. I'd keep it, making it more comfortable to sit in. For me it's not just about the view, it's also the light, love sitting by a window to read.

I got rid of mine. Currently there is nothing in the window now but you'd be surprised how much space it frees it. I am tempted to buy a snazzy armchair at some point though.

I would keep it personally as it's a nice quirky little feature for the house as long as you do it up so it's not actually uncomfortable. I'd paint the bottom half of it (maybe make some storage in there?) and then use a load of different fabrics in similar colours to make the seat cover and the cushions. Having said that, I've never really known a window seat that anyone sits on - they are a feature for the room so if you need the space or don't like it then get rid.
