Anyone have any current knowledge of Grimsby/Cleethorpes please? Where not to buy I suppose, realistically; as I have no idea about the areas. Thanks.

Grim. Better places available.

UrsulaBursula · 03/02/2022 00:57

Don’t know the area that much but from what I do know; it’s horrible.

Catra · 03/02/2022 01:00

My Dad's side of the family live in Cleethorpes and Grimsby.

Where not to buy? Um, everywhere.

Midlander88 · 03/02/2022 01:30

Just move to Hull and commute if you can. It's much nicer

ChuckMater · 03/02/2022 01:45

It depends what you are looking for.

There's a lot of lovely villages on the outskirts and off the a16 towards Louth.
Cleethorpes, of course, has the beach.

Languishingonthesidelines · 03/02/2022 07:08

Why is it grim ?

TizerorFizz · 03/02/2022 08:53

Because they are run down areas. There are better places to live.

LincolnshireLassInLondon · 03/02/2022 09:01

I would look at edges: Waltham, Humberstone, Scartho, Holton-le-Clay. Around People's Park / Devonshire Ave is also nice if you want to be in town.

If you can be further out it gets nicer. The villages towards Louth and Market Rasen are generally lovely. Caistor is a good middle ground in terms of town / rural if you can go that far out. Louth and Brigg also nice places to live.

lastqueenofscotland · 03/02/2022 10:06

Why there if you have no idea about it? It is VERY deprived.
Barton is a fair bit nicer and not far away.

Roxy69 · 03/02/2022 14:59

Just to expand a bit. I don't want a mortgage and these areas I can buy outright so that's why I was thinking of moving there. I thought they looked like ordinary terraced roads. I can't afford where I am now thanks to Londoners moving in and pricing stuff out of the reach of locals. Gutted. Still, as long as they are happy.
However it would be useful to know which are the worst roads I guess.

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 03/02/2022 15:31

It’s not just worst roads though is it? It’s education and deprivation. House prices are obviously market driven. It’s not a market just influenced by people coming out of London. It’s land shortages, lack of building and a whole host of other things that make some areas more expensive than others.

Why are you not getting a mortgage? If you cannot afford anything where you are, why not find somewhere pleasant with a mortgage? That’s what most people do.

Hoppinggreen · 03/02/2022 15:34

Friends live in Stallingborough (sp?)
Seems nice when we have visited

Hoppinggreen · 03/02/2022 15:35

What’s your budget and requirements?

LincolnshireLassInLondon · 03/02/2022 16:07

I think it really depends on what you're looking for. I grew up in the area and still have friends and family there and always enjoy visiting. You can have a lovely life in Grimsby / Cleethorpes, no doubt, but it depends on what you want from life and from your community. Cheap housing is definitely a plus for the area. Can you give us an indication of what kind of things you're looking for OP?

ChuckMater · 03/02/2022 16:11

Whats your budget? Obviously the houses under 100k in the middle of town are not in a nice area ... further out of town there's a lot nicer areas and houses available

caringcarer · 03/02/2022 21:29

It is a very deprived area. Hull is not too far away, and nicer and prices are still cheap in Hull. My son recently bought a 2 bedroom terraced nicely decorated for £75k.

azu · 03/02/2022 22:00

Humberston and that end of Cleethorpes is OK! I have elderly relatives living in Humberston, and it is quiet, semi-rural and has a community - yet is within walking distance of the beach. All the outlying villages are good. Just avoid the more crowded 'urban' areas of Grimsby and Cleethorpes and you will be fine (and avoid Immingham!). Grimsby has a bad rap, but it really isn't all deprivation.

Yes, this. Scartho is a bit more urban and closer to the notorious Nunsthorpe Estate ('the Nunny') but Holton-le-Clay, New Waltham and Waltham, and going out that way are lovely.
Catra · 04/02/2022 00:21

There's a reason why house prices in Grimsby and Cleethorpes are so cheap. The clue's in the name - Grim-sby.

Do you really want to live somewhere around extreme poverty and all the social issues that come with it? There are very few decent jobs, hardly any diversity, and subsequently lots of narrow-mindedness and prejudice. The last time I visited it was like going back in time several decades.

lololololollll · 04/02/2022 07:08

All Londoners ey? 😂😂😂

FlipflopHatstand · 04/02/2022 07:13

Well as someone who lives near Cleethorpes and Grimsby I'd say there's good and bad bits. If you're moving location I suspect you work from home or don't need a job?
There's good and bad everywhere, I'd be happy to talk about things we like and things we put up with as part of the compromise

Roxy69 · 04/02/2022 08:47

Lots of interesting info thanks. I am retired and can't think how I'm ever going to increase my small pot of money so it's Hobson's choice I'm afraid, but continuing to rent is not an option. Eventually the savings will be of no meaningful value. I wanted to be not too far from friends but that may not be an option now. Still, it hasn't been all bad. Thanks.

Low I'm afraid, 70K. Must have a garden for the elderly dog. That just about might get me out of trouble then I can start to save my rent.
