Anyone have any current knowledge of Grimsby/Cleethorpes please? Where not to buy I suppose, realistically; as I have no idea about the areas. Thanks.

Barton on Humber, withernsea, Hornsea, Skegness, chapel st Leonard’s all are fairly cheap

Dumfries and Galloway is a really lovely area and has quite a bit of cheap housing still.

If you didn’t mind a ground floor flat you might find something in bridlington or scarborough.

Go anywhere but Grimsby

SummerBluez · 04/02/2022 22:28

@Svalberg
You do know Mumsnet threads aren't for the exclusive use of the OP right? It's entirely possible that at some point someone may type Grimsby into the search engine and find the more information on the surrounding area the better.
And also the irony of calling someone stupid when you mispelled the word "be" Grin

SummerBluez · 04/02/2022 22:32

Anyway @Svalberg I'll leave it there with you as at this point you're derailing the thread completely and being even less helpful than me Grin
OP, don't get disheartened. There's Brigg as I mentioned and lots of small villages surrounding the area - have a look at Habrough, Keelby, Stallingborough, South Killingholme. All small quiet villages and house prices are in the low range compared to much of the country.

Gastonia · 04/02/2022 22:40

They may be in the low range, but what is there that the OP can afford? She is in a difficult situation.

If I were her, I might wonder how often friends from Norfolk might visit, and wonder whether it might be better to start again somewhere much cheaper but further away. Dumfries might be a bit far, but perhaps there's somewhere else a bit nearer.

Didiusfalco · 04/02/2022 23:01

Is it worth holding off until the elderly dog pops his clogs and getting a much nicer flat?

GinFug · 05/02/2022 00:33

@Roxy69 I'm also a Norfolk girl who now lives in North Lincolnshire. I've lived in three towns mentioned on the thread so far and I have good things to say about all of them.
North and North East Lincolshire is like everywhere else, it is what you make it. There are fab people, lovely arts centres and great independent shops. Don't be put off by the bad publicity

Doubledoorsontogarden · 05/02/2022 08:05

Have you looked into retirement property in the south east? Or Shropshire?

I have and they are good prices. The thing is, I don't think I'm ready yet. I have a dog and he is very old and I'm sure I want another after her demise to keep active, but mostly they won't let you replace a pet.

@Blackbird2020

I think it’s great that you’re in a position where you don’t have young children to consider, plus you don’t have to profit from the purchase, just basically put an end to haemorrhaging rent money.

I don’t know the area but just wanted to give you a positive boost! I hope you find a place you can call home soon! Like a PP said, you can find good people everywhere.

Thank you very much. I go up and down on this search almost daily. I am in mainly positive though and dream of the day I will finally, after a few years; sit on my own sofa.

@LincolnshireLassInLondon

It's obviously a personal thing, but for what it's worth OP, this is what I'd do in your shoes.

I'd go for Cleethorpes not Grimsby. I'd avoid the Freeman St / Riby Square end of Grimsby Road. I'd aim to be within walking distance of the sea.

Cleethorpes promenade is a bit tacky (unless you're a young child in which case it's wonderful), but if you walk a little further south the sands are stunning. They are differently beautiful at different times of year. I would happily walk there ever day, and do when I visit, and I wouldn't get bored.

There are a few nice cafes and restaurants. Your friends could visit and have a trip to the seaside. The library is good and partly funded by Dolly Parton (Google it).

Grimsby is short on free things to do, or in fact things to do generally.

Thanks for that. It is useful, I would love to live near the sea as it has always been in my mind. There are the Wolds too, I have a guidebook at the ready. It's a good read even if I don't get there.

Agreed with a poster above about Scarborough. I'd look there. Its quite a nice town and has tons of reasonable accomodation. Train station in the centre with links to York. Might be able to find a ground floor flat with some outside space. Much preferred to NE Lincolnshire IMHO.

mjf981 · 06/02/2022 08:17

Bridlington also an option, and likely cheaper. But not as nice in Scarb.

Footgoose · 06/02/2022 08:57

I live in Grimsby . I’m from the south and I’ve settled really well. There are some amazing villages and small settlements around Grimsby offering excellent rural / semi rural living with good community vibe . Excellent schools do exist but so do some awful ones. However, I’ve just seen your Budget and that would place you in the most grim of areas . I wouldn’t do it .
The best you might do is an area called the Willows.

I would recommend anyone looking to live near Grimsby search “lincolnshire wolds” . Still a lot of amazing properties in amazing locations for reasonable prices but not sub 100 thousand…. You could try Binbrook tho’ if you have a car and could stretch your budget. Ex RAF houses come up from time to time . Good luck.

Footgoose · 06/02/2022 08:59

Cleethorpes is way more expensive than Grimsby now . Research the “Wolds” if you have a car .

LightDrizzle · 06/02/2022 09:03

Humberston is the only place I’d tolerate.

When I was in timber, one of our shopfitter customers was doing a big job in a church in Grimsby and while they were used to having to keep an eye on their tools and lock them down on breaks, it was the first job they regularly had their flasks and sandwiches stolen. It has real problems with poverty and drugs.

LightDrizzle · 06/02/2022 09:04

Scarborough is lovely!

Footgoose · 06/02/2022 09:08

Me again . I’ve just done a search of Grimsby plus 5 miles , max price 80 tho’ . Some of the areas that came up are ok. If you want to do the same , send me the details and I’ll let you know what my DH says, he’s born and bred Grimsby and knows the good as well as the bad ( born on the NunsthorpeShock) .

NotQuiteUsual · 06/02/2022 09:35

My in-laws live there and I used to. I noticed a big decline in the area recently. Some bit's are better than others. But personally I'd be looking higher up in the North East (which is what we did). We moved to the North East to be mortgage free. Feel free to pm me if you want. I can give you so local insight to Grimsby or other cheap areas too.

How about this www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/82877907#/?channel=RES_BUY

tiredoldusername · 06/02/2022 11:59

Or this on the Moray coast. Portsoy is a lovely little place with good a good community vibe.

TeaAndStrumpets · 06/02/2022 12:40

Another point which may not affect you, but Grimsby and Cleethorpes are Red Wall seats, and due for investment/bribe in Michael Gove's "levelling up" agenda. Whether it will work or not I have no idea, but it may at some point lead to a rise in house prices.

Btw from what I saw in the press, the good voters of Grimsby, when interviewed about the shenanigans at no 10, were mostly indifferent. "Just a slice of cake" was one comment Grin

Roxy69 · 07/02/2022 21:27

Many thanks to everyone who replied and for their good suggestions. I am going to have a good mental sort-out this week. Continuing to rent will be financial suicide and I am grateful I have even this unpromising amount compared to many others.

Could you buy a property for 70 thousand so where and rent it for the income . Then stay where you are . We friends who pay about 70 to 90 thousand per . Mixed experiences with tenants but mostly good . You might get a decent rentable flat somewhere in UK for 70K ?

Languishingonthesidelines · 07/02/2022 22:51

Like we need more BTL landlords up here Hmm

I had thought of that very scenario. The trouble is I'm not moving on if I do that. I'm in a first floor flat and it's a bit of a pain with carrying shopping up, no outside garden space etc etc. I live in a decent area but I will have to either increase the rent or move. I think I'm fairly certain of that. Better now than later though as property doesn't usually go down.
