Anyone have any current knowledge of Grimsby/Cleethorpes please? Where not to buy I suppose, realistically; as I have no idea about the areas. Thanks.

@LincolnshireLassInLondon

Do you drive OP?
This is a very valid point if considering living in north lincs. Also what do you do for work? Assuming you could move to a very deprived area and find a job easily is very naive.

@lololololollll

All Londoners ey? 😂😂😂
That was my thought too!😂
FlipflopHatstand · 04/02/2022 16:21

Assuming you drive, and would consider a flat (with garden) then Marshchappel is a nice little village and has more amenities than most. It's about 10 minutes from Cleethorpes.

Yes! This would be lovely!

sunshinesupermum · 04/02/2022 17:05

Ex H just moved away from there after seven years back down south. Think he couldn't live without a Waitrose.

TeaAndStrumpets · 04/02/2022 17:33

I was born in Nunsthorpe Maternity Hospital Blush I imagine it's long gone!

You can find decent people everywhere, OP, hope you find somewhere nice to live.

Roxy69 · 04/02/2022 19:59

@miltonj

Where do you live at the moment?
Norfolk

Yes I do. Would consider further afield but was hoping not to move so far away it stops people coming to see me. Might have to though. Rock/hard place!

Estate agent told me. I have been trying for ages and the ones I can afford get snapped up. Apparently people just buy online without seeing them, then its Air bnb etc. I was amazed.

I think it’s great that you’re in a position where you don’t have young children to consider, plus you don’t have to profit from the purchase, just basically put an end to haemorrhaging rent money.

I don’t know the area but just wanted to give you a positive boost! I hope you find a place you can call home soon! Like a PP said, you can find good people everywhere.

LincolnshireLassInLondon · 04/02/2022 21:33

It's obviously a personal thing, but for what it's worth OP, this is what I'd do in your shoes.

I'd go for Cleethorpes not Grimsby. I'd avoid the Freeman St / Riby Square end of Grimsby Road. I'd aim to be within walking distance of the sea.

Cleethorpes promenade is a bit tacky (unless you're a young child in which case it's wonderful), but if you walk a little further south the sands are stunning. They are differently beautiful at different times of year. I would happily walk there ever day, and do when I visit, and I wouldn't get bored.

There are a few nice cafes and restaurants. Your friends could visit and have a trip to the seaside. The library is good and partly funded by Dolly Parton (Google it).

Grimsby is short on free things to do, or in fact things to do generally.

Immingham has had a major renovation over the last decade and really doesn't deserve it's bad rep
Crime rate is incredibly low compared to both Grimsby and Cleethorpes.
Link above is the sort of houses now being built in Immingham, they're so much nicer than Grimsby.

SummerBluez · 04/02/2022 21:40

And in regards to education Imminghams private day nursery is Ofsted outstanding, all four primary schools are good or outstanding and the local secondary school is well on the way to outstanding.

FredBair · 04/02/2022 21:48

The OP is retired so nurseries and schools don't matter.
I agree with Cleethorpes rather than Grimsby.
Ignore all the Southern snobbery. There is poverty yes but that doesn't mean you couldn't find a decent home. To be near the sea is a big bonus.

SummerBluez · 04/02/2022 21:49

@FredBair
Someone upthread mentioned education being poor around Grimsby which is not the case everywhere. Just wanted to correct that person who has probably never been anywhere near Hmm

Svalberg · 04/02/2022 21:51

How in God's name is any of that useful to someone who is retired and has a maximum budget of 70k? The lack of comprehension here gets worse by the day.
SummerBluez · 04/02/2022 21:54

@Svalberg
I literally just said I was correcting a misinterpretation upthread due to having some knowledge of NE Lincs. Don't get upset Hmm

Chichimcgee · 04/02/2022 21:58

Norfolk is absolutely beautiful and has lots of lovely affluent areas.
Grimsby is the complete and utter opposite, honestly I think you’ll be making a huge mistake.

Surely it’s worth getting a small mortgage to live somewhere nice? If you drive there’s lots of nice villages and small market towns in Lincolnshire you can look at.

SummerBluez · 04/02/2022 22:04

OP have you looked at Brigg? That's a lovely village to retire in and not extortionate house price wise.

Gastonia · 04/02/2022 22:12

I just looked at Brigg. It might be cheap compared with the rest of the country, but there's only one place for sale under £90k on Rightmove at the moment. I can't believe how expensive everything is!

Cross post, but linking to a house that costs over 3 times the budget of the OP is insensitive at best.

SummerBluez · 04/02/2022 22:15

@Svalberg
Oh get over yourself, I wasn't advising her to buy it Grin
Just saying don't write Immingham off as it's actually much nicer than Grimsby in my experience Smile

Melkam · 04/02/2022 22:23

Try and live out of town, Caister ish. Im a Lincolnshire gal so know the area well.

So why were you linking to it? I could understand it if this was a general thread, but this is someone who is retired, with a budget of 70k looking for something specific.

The stupidity here is higher than normal, it must ne the new moon
