Kitchen island?!

We are doing an extension. The original plan was to have an L-shaped breakfast bar and not to have an island. Now the walls are built and we are hesitating.... The size of the extension is 9,40*4 m with the dining table in the middle and a little sofa area... any ideas/experience would be much appreciated.

My kitchen is 4.2 metres wide (excl the width of the cabinets which are on one side - so the floor width is 4.2 metres) and I do not have an island. I have a large table.I feel that trying to fit an island in in that width along with the table would be a squash and I like having the larger table.

You need at least 800mm space all around the island but even this will feel tight. 1000mm more normal.

A sketch would be helpful here.

It depends on where your doors will be and where abouts you plan to put the kitchen. I think you obviously have a long thin room which doesn't lend itself to an island.

However, you could have one running parallel with your long walls - so say 60cm for units against the wall, 1m to island, 90cm wide island (although thats quite narrow) and then you'd have 1.7m between island and wall (which is wide enough for island seating and walkway behind, but nothing on that wall). That obviously depends on placement.
