Old Basing

Hi everyone!
Recently relocated to Basingstoke/Winchester area and renting but wanting to buy in the next 6-9 months with a budget of about 650k depending on what my house sells for.
Does anyone know old basing? Considering a development which is coming soon in the area.
I know most would say Winch but it really is quite expensive in terms of actual square feet for area though we would consider uprooting in the future as we are planning children within next 12 months.

I would never say Winchester. We live south of Winchester and I am appalled at the prices demanded for houses. It’s definitely not somewhere you get value for money house wise.

Somanyquestions1984 · 24/01/2022 20:46

Haha @Policyschmolicy I can’t help but agree.

I grew up in Old Basing! Haven’t lived there for years but family are still local. I’m not sure what any new developments are like but as far as I know it’s still a nice place to live. Lychpit and Chineham aren’t bad either.

For £650k you can get this sort of house in Lychpit. www.zoopla.co.uk/for-sale/details/60470722/?search_identifier=d4226c8f376c483c2944a794e083503d

I work in Old Basing and it's really nice. Lots of countryside, nice houses, lovely little village centre, nice community.

Somanyquestions1984 · 24/01/2022 21:25

Ooohh this is sounding good so far thanks @Roominmyhouse that looks good, does anyone know about schools?

St Mary's has a nice reputation. Although mine are teens and I'm out of the loop with primary schools.

Lots of the teens go to Costello. I like it, my eldest is there and all his mates live in Old Basing.

Roominmyhouse · 24/01/2022 21:40

St Mary’s in the village is very popular and still a good school I believe. I went there many moons ago! I went to Robert Mays in Odiham for secondary but I don’t think Old Basing is in the catchment for that now.

Basingstoke isn’t the most exciting town in the world but generally it was a good place to live. Easy to hop on a train to London, Reading, Winchester. Not too far to go down to the south coast.

Both the infants and juniors are currently Ofsted outstanding schools. (juniors have just been re-inspected)

Somanyquestions1984 · 24/01/2022 22:38

Thanks all,

@Dumpydump are you referring to Old Basing Infant School?

I live very close to Old Basing - Basingstoke has seen a LOT of development over the last few years.

It's a nice area, considered 'posh', along with Chineham and Hatch Warren... Old Basing is one of the most expensive areas and parking / driving can be a pain, especially along some of the streets.

What people have found is - whilst there are a lot of new houses going up, there's very little actual supporting infrastructure being added. If you're on the local Facebook groups, the number of people who ask 'Are there any NHS dentists I can go to?' - probably 2-3 posts every day? As well as 'I can't get a Doctors appointment for 3.5 weeks'. The local vet (the Barn) has just had all but one of their vets quit and are experiencing issues as well.

The local shopping center is currently undergoing a bit of a refurb - you've got a new Vegan cafe coming soon and a new world foods shop which apparently is pretty good. The local pubs (The Longbridge Mill / Wellington Arms / Jekyll and Hyde) are all very pleasant and decent - certainly not spit and sawdust and you can get to them very quickly along the A33.
