Places to live near Portsmouth

Hello,

We are hoping to move down to Portsmouth for my husband's new job. We've got two children under 3 and so are hoping to find a place with good schools and a generally family-friendly feel.

Ideally we'd like to not live in the city itself, but somewhere a little smaller that's easily commutable. We've got a budget of up to £550k so not somewhere too expensive (if that exists!)

If anyone has any ideas we'd be very grateful for any inspiration or local knowledge..

how does your OH need to get to work ie is train an option? Portsmouth road traffic, being an island, can be a bit rubbish.
Chichester is nice but may be pricey. Horndean just up the A3 or Petersfield are good options for more of a country feel. Nice range of independent shops and some high street bigger ones in Petersfield too. The South Downs National park status does push prices a little but some lovely places to look at. Good luck!
