We've bought a multi door and love it. It is massive though. The full width fridge shelves are fabulous.

Surveyor is on his way. Hoping like hell he agrees with my assessment of the increased valuation or we will be stuck with no floors or en-suite fittings for the foreseeable. Fingers crossed please!

We have looked at so many loos. I like the look of wall hung for cleaning but fear everyone is too fat / annoying children to trust it. We also need new fitted furniture for our downstairs loo as the builders have decimated the existing 🙄

Bluebellsunderthetrees · 18/03/2022 10:33

@LivingInaBuildingSite Same problem here. Ancient old high rise cistern are great but I need a new toilet solution too. So also following with interest.

Bluebellsunderthetrees · 18/03/2022 10:35

@BlueMooMoo Paean black and cashmere sound gorgeous. I love Paean black and plan to have it in the kitchen somewhere too.

Thank you! Still probably 6months out from getting it installed but I've wanted that black for a long time so I'm hoping I'll still love it once it's installed.
I was tempted to go with peignoir or sulking room pink rather than cashmere but I think I'm going to go with a pinky taupe white on the walls instead. There was a poster on here who went for Lipgloss (brand unknown) and shared a picture which I really liked the look of.

BlueMooMoo · 18/03/2022 20:50

@LivingInaBuildingSite

Can we talk toilets?

I have put in two new bathrooms in recent years and have to choose another toilet for the downstairs loo.

Loft bathroom has a more traditional looking but modern loo.
First floor bathroom has a modern wall hung loo.

Neither work well in terms of poo. Sorry tmi! We used to have an old one downstairs that worked perfectly well. The wall hung loo has a shelf effect that apparently the Germans like as they can examine their output - so I’ve been told! 😂

I basically want the old loo we had before, very few skid marks, no shelf, easy to clean, etc.

Has anyone fitted one recently that works?!

I've been looking at rimless toilets which seem good? But definitely get a round toilet - we have a fancy oblong one in the main bathroom and a) it's impossible to get a seat for it b) it dig into my (admittedly ample) thighs and rump!
Martinisarebetterdirty · 18/03/2022 21:17

Loo wise we recently fitted a rimless Burlington traditional one, the flush is decent Grin
The lipgloss paint was by Valspar and done by @Callmejudith, it was stunning and I think I’m copying it too.

Bluebellsunderthetrees · 19/03/2022 14:36

@BlueMooMoo I think pinky taupe white would be perfect ! I'm going to use SRP in one room as well
Thanks for the lip gloss paint info too @Martinisarebetterdirty and toilet hints Grin

Hello can I join? waves single storey extension booked in for July. Extending our main bedroom, adding an en-suite and making DD’s room bigger as currently a box room. Am already Shock at the costs. Never done anything like this before so reading all tips and advice gratefully!

Stevie77 · 20/03/2022 08:32

@DarlingCoffee is that a ground floor or first floor (on top of existing g/floor) extension? If so, can I ask you how much you’ve been quoted and what’s the sq.m.?

We’re buying a house where we planned to do the latter, on top of the existing recent extension but really struggle to get an idea of costs. From research we’ve done it should be cheaper than a two storey extension (no need to dig foundations etc.), but speaking to some builders it may not be.

DarlingCoffee · 20/03/2022 08:47

@Stevie77 it’s a fairly small first floor extension over our lounge and is about £70k now with all the price increases. It’s unlikely to add corresponding value to our property but this is our forever house so planning on future proofing as much as possible.

NewHouseNewMe · 20/03/2022 09:10

Toilet people - I feel your pain! I have to buy 4 bathrooms this weekend apparently Shock. The only thing worse is the vanity units? How can they be so expensive? Even the cheaper ones are £400/each when you add in the plugs etc.

@DarlingCoffee - welcome! Whether it is cheaper will depend on the foundations on the existing structure you’re building over. Is it an extension or part of the original house? Some don’t support another story, especially if originally garages.

NewHouseNewMe · 20/03/2022 09:14

So vanity units - any inspired thoughts on where to source a smaller version of this without sending me bankrupt?

Have you tried Etsy? I found loads of lovely ones on there. I spent many many hours looking at vanity units and went with this one in the end. I got blind to it all and just picked one.

Hello everyone, can I join?

We have just exchanged on a detached house and plan to knock the kitchen/dining room through and add a large Orangery coming off both rooms and possibly off the lounge as well. Doing it this way means we don't need planning (subject to size) just building regs apparently.

We are also knocking the study through to the utility to make a larger room so that moving forward we could, if needed, make it a downstairs bedroom/en suite. We will relocate the utility space into the solid wall of the Orangery and soundproof it.

We also need to redo the main bathroom and replace the flooring throughout. The main lounge needs a new fireplace and flooring too.

I will need a lot of help with these plans and I can see from reading the thread that you are all very knowledgeable and might think of things I have no clue about.

We need to square off the kitchen and block up two doorways into the hall. We intend to install a double set of pocket doors from the hallway to give the line of sight through to the Orangery.

I think we are intending to source the kitchen from DIY but will get quotes from a couple of independents too.

Omg, written down, that all sounds like a lot of work......it has all been in my head up to now. Help!

NewHouseNewMe · 20/03/2022 20:22

Welcome @CheltenhamLady. You will still need permitted development even if not planning permission which is basically confirmation that you don’t need PP!

@Sewfrickinamazeballs that’s exactly it, thanks! Off to Etsy to have a look now.

GardensandGrandDesigns · 20/03/2022 20:40

Welcome to all the new joiners! So many people renovating in what is probably the most expensive time to ever do a project. We must all be a bit bonkers!
Lovely to chat to like minded crazy people though ☺️

For those that have gone with DIY kitchens... Have you bought the draw inserts or any extras? Is the dovetailing on the drawers expensive and can you add it on the non inframe ranges. I vaguely remember seeing it on Instagram!

BlueMooMoo · 20/03/2022 21:22

@Sewfrickinamazeballs I’ve been all over Etsy and can’t find any even similar. Do you recall the name of the seller? I’d be so grateful - I’ve 4 bathrooms to fill Shock

BlueMooMoo · 21/03/2022 08:00

I'm glad we're all on bathrooms this week! I have got to finalise my selection for quote before Wednesday but getting shower screen blindness right now. I have 3 bathrooms and one wc to kit out - all with slightly different sizes

Sorry, I realise last message was confusing. I got mine from a bathroom shop in the end. I suggested Etsy as I saw lots on their much lower in price but in different styles. Like you, I struggled to find what I wanted.

Mine is an ideal standard from bathroom supplies online. It came with the sink and was just over £800. Daylight robbery.

I've ditched the vanity in the cloakroom toilet and will just put a wall hung sink in their. Do you need a vanity in all bathrooms or could you add the storage elsewhere?

NewHouseNewMe · 21/03/2022 08:39

Oh that is beautiful indeed. I am now looking there.. Sadly three en-suites need the storage as all actively used from day 1, the other bathroom can skip it as it'll be an occasional room. Like you I was debating what to put in the cloakroom toilet as it's small so I am just going with a small wall mounted sink.

Where the cleaning fluid and toilet brush will go, I've no idea. (Sorry I know toilet brushes can't be mentioned on Mumsnet!)

NewHouseNewMe · 21/03/2022 08:41

@BlueMooMoo are you ordering from plans? I'm slightly reluctant to order showers/trays/doors until I see the final space, but we're months off that point. I am ordering vanity units as I'm seeing the prices go up every day!

Just lost a whole message! Ah, long story short. Yes we are ordering from plans. There are allowances on shower screens etc to allow for fitting so we should be ok. We are ordering through the builders supplier though so it should be relatively easy to swap if needed although lead times may affect choices. Apparently there are some planned price increases in April for some of the big brands they think - Crosswater, aqualisa, so they've advised me the earlier I can make my choices the better and they will honour the quote.
