Cost to paint radiator

Have a feeling I’m being “had” by my decorator… how much to paint a radiator (there are 7 in the property) with a colour matched paint, in NW London? Any guesses? Thanks!

Per radiator or for all 7?

I have no idea but would guess about £30 each assuming it would take a few hours, plus the cost of paint, but if its just the one probably more pro rata

Goosethemoose · 18/01/2022 21:41

Either, I just meant that there are 7 (and actually the decorator is already there doing some other —also expensive— work) so it’s not that he needs to add in overheads for materials/trip for a single rad. Thanks!

Is he going to take them off the wall and prep them properly?

WhatsitWiggle · 18/01/2022 21:46

Depends on whether putting a coat on top of already painted rads - I'd suggest 2 hours work so maybe £100

Or stripping existing paint back, metal primer then colour paint, more like a days work, so £300-£350

AwkwardPaws27 · 18/01/2022 21:47

Depends how much prep work really - if there's lots of old flaky paint to strip or rub down it could be quite time consuming.
If just a straightforward coat of paint - guessing an hour each coat, two coats per rad... £50 each?

Goosethemoose · 18/01/2022 21:49

I think he’s painting them in place, but they’ll need a good clean… I don’t think he’s planning to strip back to the metal, but can clarify.

Depends on the radiator. Flat panel radiators much quicker and easier than the modern tube type or the massive old cast iron ones.

Depends on size too and if he's takikg them off the wall, stripping, sanding between coats etc or just slapping some primer and then emulsion on.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/01/2022 21:56

Is he taking them off the wall first?

Goosethemoose · 18/01/2022 21:57

Not taking off the wall, and they’re the modern flat panel ones.

If they're basic radiators, compare the cost of new rads. It might even be cheaper!

I'm In the wrong job!

The cost of some cleaning wipes and a tin of radiator paint - plus a couple of hours a day over a weekend. Sod paying anyone else to do it!

Would rather spread out the time spent painting and use the “quoted” costs to have a couple of meals out or multiple takeaways over a few weeks.

Somanysocks · 19/01/2022 15:05

£45 per rad?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/01/2022 20:04

I’m guessing £500 for all
