Moving to Nottingham

Ikara1234 · 16/01/2022 13:37

We are moving to Nottingham from SE London and have been looking to buy. Buying in ie Arnold, Gedling, Calverton etc has not been easy. We see a house we like and next agent telling us someone has offered more.

We don't want a village, we didn't mind Calverton because the house we found was very out of the village 12 mins drive to Arnold.

We decided to look out and found Mansfield. Am a nurse and and DH works in construction. We have 9 and 1 year old. The schools review i have been reading online has been requires improvement.

Please help is Mansfield a good place to live?

Thanks.

West Bridgford is expensive and not that great. Everyone always says West Bridgford, we know it as Bread and Lard Island.

All of the houses built were of a good standard. In fact, they were of such a good standard that the rumour went around that, if you could afford to live in one, the only food you'd be able to afford with the money left over would be bread and lard.

SleeplessWB · 16/01/2022 15:40

For work in Newark or Gedling I would agree with Mapperley, Sherwood, Bingham or Radcliffe. Other areas like Beeston are no good for commuting that way, and nor is West Bridgford really... And you will get almost nothing for £300k in WB.

Thank you all so very much. We are going to start from beginning again and I am very excited this time!! ❤️

Hi.Wondering how you got on with your move? In a similar position moving from London to Nottingham in September. Black family so also interested in somewhere where my DD can be happy.

The middle class areas like Beeston, Wollaton etc are very, very white. My friends husband is black and from London, they have a child together. It was a huge culture shock at first and there have been some issues, unfortunately.

I prefer to live on the outskirts of the student areas, far more diverse.

Which are the student areas you mean? Lenton? Beeston? Anywhere else with checking out?

Beeston is a student area though no? I went to uni there and was v popular with postgrads and international students.

Lenton is studenty. Radford just next door was always a bit dodgy though.

Should say don’t recommend living in actual Lenton. It is literally just roads of student rentals, not a place for families.

Are you going to be working at QMC City or Kings mill. Bear in mind that it is very difficult to get a parking permit at NUH. So either be near the park and ride or the tram. Apparently staff will no longer be allowed to park in the visitors car park and pay anymore. But there is another private car park you could use if needed. It's £7 a day though. The bus service to QMC is fab but if you live anywhere other than the Beeston/ Chillwell/ long Eaton it's two buses. As you will have to go into town and change.

CousCousSalad · 28/05/2022 22:47

@CWTJ I'd suggest looking at Carrington, Sherwood, Mapperley - nice, affordable areas with up and coming high streets, good transport, and much more diverse than other parts of Nottingham.

I'd be careful of Radford/St Ann's/Forest Fields areas, as whilst also more diverse they are quite dodgy in parts.

I'd avoid Bulwell/Arnold/Bestwood as areas where there are largely white working class populations who are pro-brexit, anti-immigration - lots of lovely people too of course but I'd worry your children would feel less welcome.

I'm less familiar with the South of the city so can't advise as easily.

RedPlumbob · 29/05/2022 05:51

Beeston has a lot of student housing yes, but they don’t use the actual town itself. They stay on campus and in the city, therefore no diversity via them. They’re also obviously not on the school runs or using the family facilities. Friend and DH have been there 10 years, so this is direct from them and their lived experience.

Agree re Brexit areas, disagree with Forest Fields - I recently spent a few years there and saw/experienced zero crime. It is, however, grubby and run down.

Carrington and Sherwood are lovely, the schools are great and diverse (we lived on the edge of Forest Fields and DCs went to a school in Carrington).

My sisters best friend from school (who she’s not seen for years) moved to the area last year, bumped into her on the school run and she (mixed race) was very pleasantly surprised at how few white people were knocking around at the school gate (having moved to racist bullying of her daughter).

Pinkmagic1 · 29/05/2022 07:28

I agree with others, definitely avoid Mansfield and Hucknall is not much better.
If you are to be working in Gedling, have you also considered Carlton and Bakersfield?

RedPlumbob · 29/05/2022 18:57

Mansfield, Sutton, Kirkby, Hucknall - no, no, no. One of them is my hometown. They are all deeply unpleasant places to live.

Mapletreelane · 29/05/2022 21:06

@CWTJ where will you need to be close to on Nottingham? Rushcliffe school and West Bridgford school which serve the West Bridgford area are diverse. Check out the alumni on the Wikipedia pages. We live in the area and new neighbours have moved in who are a mixed race couple and commented how they have noticed the area much more diverse than where they previously lived, and they feel they don't stand out.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 29/05/2022 21:10

Mansfield is horrible.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 29/05/2022 21:12

I could be unlucky but the majority of people I've encountered from Mansfield have been racist.
Parts of Arnold are ok. Try looking at Mapperly, Sherwood, Woodthorpe. You could get a three bed if you don't mind something that needs a bit of work. Schools are decent in those areas too.

My work will actually be in Derby but I want to live in Notts. I don't know what the traffic hotspots are - as long as I can link to the a52 I'm flexible.

Mapletreelane · 30/05/2022 10:01

@CWTJ hmmm, West Bridgford and Edwalton are close to the A52, but it goes through Nottingham, and that can be an absolute nightmare at rush hour; although if you were working from home a few days a week it would be bearable. Wollaton and Beeston as other posters have mentioned are better placed geographically as they are on the A52 but as you leave Nottingham, but I have no idea about diversity there - sorry.

Surferrosa74 · 30/05/2022 10:14

Wollaston is fairly diverse from a south Asian perspective, quite a lot of the more affluent Indian families live there. Bramcote will also be good place to live if you’re commuting to Derby as it’s the right side of Nottingham and on the A52.

Surferrosa74 · 30/05/2022 10:15

Wollaton, not Wollaston..

DaimDillyDoo · 30/05/2022 10:16

@CWTJ I live in Nottingham and I work in Derby 2/3 times per week and work from home the rest. I live in Mapperly and it takes about 35 minutes into Derby, usually longer to get home though at 5ish.

The schools are good, the area is diverse and has a lot going off regularly down the road at Sneinton Market, the houses are lovely and there's some lovely shops/bars/restaurants on Mapperly top. House prices have gone mental though.

Carlton, Thorneywood and Gedling are close by also.

Samosably · 30/05/2022 10:28

Lowdham is lovely. As is Lindby and Papplewick. Mansfield way does have a lot for kids but it’s rough.

Does it? I left there a decade ago and regularly go back to visit family and there’s no more there now than there was when I left (zero).

Isausernameavailable · 30/05/2022 17:01

I work in Nottingham and really like Sherwood

Edderkop · 30/05/2022 17:11

Linby, Papplewick and Lowdham are all very white. They're not somewhere I would consider if you want to blend in.
