Moving to Nottingham

We are moving to Nottingham from SE London and have been looking to buy. Buying in ie Arnold, Gedling, Calverton etc has not been easy. We see a house we like and next agent telling us someone has offered more.

We don't want a village, we didn't mind Calverton because the house we found was very out of the village 12 mins drive to Arnold.

We decided to look out and found Mansfield. Am a nurse and and DH works in construction. We have 9 and 1 year old. The schools review i have been reading online has been requires improvement.

Please help is Mansfield a good place to live?

Thanks.

Mansfield is an absolute shithole.

I live in west bridgford and love it. Schools are amazing too and great shops, bars, restaurants and amenities.
There are 3 bedroom houses fir your price range, but not many.
If you can't find anything suitable personally I'd try Wilford, Ruddington, Bingham or bottesford. The A52 into Nottingham from this side of the city can be a bit rough at rush hours though ,

oh type error, i mean will not be bullied.

Beeston, Chilwell, Toton all good areas and decent access to Derby and QMC hospitals for work.

silenenutans · 16/01/2022 14:33

Nottingham is really varied. Over all it's diverse, certainly in the central parts of the city and in many of the suburbs. e.g. Beeston has the university so students and staff from all over, West Bridgford is a bit diverse, in a very middle class sort of way.

There are some real pockets of 'localness' of a very white kind though, in areas like Bulwell, Bestwood and the old mining towns e.g. Hucknall and all the towns down the west side, between Notts and Derbs, Ilkeston etc. I'd avoid those.

The eastern villages are mostly agricultural rather than mining. There's quite a stark contrast.

MsAnnFrope · 16/01/2022 14:35

My best mate has lived in Mapperley and Wollaton both of which felt like good areas to be in.

LIZS · 16/01/2022 14:42

Look along A46 south of Newark. Bingham has lots of new builds and is attracting families. Southwell is lovely but possibly beyond budget. What type of work is dh likely to get and where?

Dinnertime22 · 16/01/2022 14:47

Hucknall has alot of re development in the past few years. A wider range of families and schools. Not too far from the City Centre and close to some lovely parks. Better value for money with houses too.
Raveshead is decent, but expensive.
Sherwood is OK, but like Carrington it is closer to Notts City Centre. Not keen on Calverton. Mapperley is OK. Arnold is not great anymore and not diverse.
Avoid Manfield.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 16/01/2022 14:48

Beeston really isn’t that diverse. My friends DH is black, and from London, they live in Beeston. It’s a very white place - however it’s not a racist place, like Mansfield etc.

Sherwood, Carrington and Forest Fields are very diverse. One of my younger sisters old school friends (black and from London) recently moved to my area (which is one of those 3) and commented on how surprised she was when viewing schools (all decent).

MyQuietPlace · 16/01/2022 14:51

Mansfield isn't very nice. I live in Redhill, which is close enough to the shops in Arnold and Calverton.

AVOID :
Sutton in Ashfield
Kirkby in Ashfield
Hucknall
Radford
Lenton
St. Ann's
Sneinton
The Meadows

GOOD areas:
Redhill
Sherwood
Arnold
Carlton
Mapperley
Lambley
Lowdham

annonymousse · 16/01/2022 14:54

I live in berry hill in Mansfield but I work in Nottingham and rarely go into Mansfield town centre. Houses are cheaper than Nottingham and you get more for your money. The demographic is very white British working class and as you said you're a family of colour I think school could be tough for your kids. Have to say tho Friday nights down town pre covid were great for people watching.

Whatsyourfavouritescarymovie · 16/01/2022 14:56

I used to live in Mansfield, you couldn't pay me to move back there, horrible place.

I now live in Watnall, lovely place to live, close to the motorway, close to EMA, close to the city and major hospitals, lots of woodland nearby for walks, close to several other little towns, rather expensive area, properties don't last long on the market, great schools, lovely community.

BugsyDrakeTableScape · 16/01/2022 15:00

Try Bramcote, Wollaton, Beeston, Chilwell

lostinlego · 16/01/2022 15:01

Mapperly, Gedling and Carlton all have good schools and good access to shops and public transport. Gedling country park is beautiful and a good place to take the kids. You should be able to get a 3/4 bed semi in that price. Maybe a detached in some areas.

GerbilCurse · 16/01/2022 15:02

Hucknall is definitely on the up. It's more of a Nottingham suburb than ex-mining town now imo. Its certainly very unfair to put it on a list with St Anns. Good transport links, road, rail and tram. Has had huge developments over the past decade so things like GP provision is patchy. Some of the schools are rated very highly.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2022 15:03

Mansfield is awful!

RavenT · 16/01/2022 15:03

West Bridgford always gets mentioned on these threads....

But imo it's very overpriced and there are better areas where your money will go further.

Wollaton, Bramcote, Beeston, Mapperly, Sherwood all good starting points.

SparklingXmas · 16/01/2022 15:04

We are people of colour and have lived in Mansfield for over 20 years( we were warned about it before hand, racism bnp county etc- but we are always trying to prove people wrong!), we love it, people are friendly, good schools, green spaces and some areas are quite affluent and nice. I did live in Nottingham for a couple of years and it seemed grim in comparison. Good luck.

tamarinda · 16/01/2022 15:06

mansfield is awful unless you're in berry hill.

ravenshead is lovely if you can afford somewhere there! I know you're not looking for a village but they're much nicer than the towns and cheaper than central nottingham in many cases

Toddlerteaplease · 16/01/2022 15:06

I live in Lento due to its proximity to QMC, I love it. But it's overpriced and probably not the kind of area the OP wants!

GerbilCurse · 16/01/2022 15:06

Agree, and madness to live south of the river if your work is in Gedling.

Whatsyourfavouritescarymovie · 16/01/2022 15:10

If you worked at QMC or City, anywhere Gedling side of the city is probably ideal, Kimberly, Giltbrook, Hucknall, Chilwell as well, especially with the skylink service, I believe that's free for NHS staff between the hospitals, or at least it used to be.

Huntswomanonthemove · 16/01/2022 15:29

Nice but not close to Newark or Gedling.
StressedButBlessedx · 16/01/2022 15:32

I'd recommend west bridgford in Nottingham, and Newark.

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/01/2022 15:35

Ravenshead is lovely but you will really struggle with that budget. Housing is very expensive there.
