Talk to me about chalk painting wooden furniture....

I know I'm about 10 years late to this but we're updating DS room and I cannot find a decent wardrobe in budget so seriously considering painting his existing solid wooden one a dark grey to match the new bed he's getting.

Will I regret this?!

What sort of prep is involved or can I get away with just slapping on chalk paint?

Do I need to wax / finish it after painting?

Is any paint better than any other??

Any advice very gratefully received.

It's really easy. Sand any jagged edges. Then apply a couple of coats of chalk paint. No need to apply anything else.

My dated pine furniture was painted grey by myself 10 years ago and it still looks good. You can just touch up scrapes as and when.

I found Annie Sloan good, but others have said rustoleum is easier.

No prep here, just two coats. I didn't bother with the wax sealant thing afterwards bc I did that on one item and hated the finish and felt it in unecessary faff.

What's the finish on your existing furniture? If lacquer then a light sand and then paint. If waxed then it'll need a bit more prep. No need for anything on top of the chalk paint, although a clear varnish will give a harder wearing finish if required.

Farrow and Ball interior wood eggshell paint does a great job. Prep well. But less work afterwards.

I used this for the first time recently and was not impressed. I prefer farrow and ball eggshell too which is what I switched too! Just lightly sand.

Glad to hear no mega prep required - will look up costs of paints recommended

B&Q have a lot of furniture paint in their clearance section on the website.
