Velux, roof lantern or flat glass roof light

We have a conservatory put in by previous owners, which has all the usual problems except getting too hot in the summer, as it is north facing.
We want to replace it with an extension and my feeling is that a glass roof would maximise the light and warmth into the north part of the ground floor.

Are there any disadvantages to a glass roof over a velux or roof lantern?

We have a N facing extension with a Velux. For me the major advantage is the ability to open it, partly for ventilation in very hot weather and partly to allow all of the flying insects which congregate up there in summer to escape (as long as we open the Velux we don’t have a problem with flies, even with the large bifold doors fully open).

Can you get smart openings in a glass roof? Some Velux can be programmed so they open before it gets too hot on a summer morning and close automatically if it rains.

I like a roof lantern but friends have one and it's a pain to clean.

We've got roof lanterns that have self cleaning glass. Haven't done a summer yet but I think we are going to have an insect problem and have bought a long handled bee catcher!

We originally wanted flat skylights but the lead time was too long - Covid.

Opening ones would be good especially if south facing. We have got top opening small windows in the patio doors that I'll be happy to leave open if we go out (safe area and small opening).

There was one of those architect programmes - your house made perfect? where they put a glass roof in an extension - and used special sun proof glass so it didn't turn into a greenhouse. Ours is just 2 roof lanterns and gets hot.
