Victorian front door (London)

Hello, the house I bought in London came with an ugly plastic front door, and I'm looking to install a wooden Victorian door and return the house to its former glory.

However, I've received quotes of around £4,000 - £5,000, which is just complete madness. I heard from someone that the best way to do this is buy an second hand door from a reclamation yard and pay a carpenter to install. Has anyone done this?

I've seen this company recommended on MN before - I haven't used them myself, but am planning to do so once we get round to replacing our front door. They have all sorts of period style doors for very reasonable prices!

Yes, or go through ebay or marketplace. Got ours for next to nothing and fitting was very reasonable by a local carpenter.

Hi, yes we've done this before, we used a company called Arc Reclamation www.arcreclamation.com. We told them the size we were looking for and the period of the property. The found something that suited, trimmed it to size, and even glazed the top two panels as it was originally a solid door. It was much, much cheaper; we just had to find someone locally to hang it.
