Hi, there are a few cracks in the walls of a 70s house we are looking to buy. Do these look like settlement cracks or could they be more serious?

Pretty sure that's just cracks in the plaster. Just need filling and painting over.

We've just had our whole house plastered and they're cropping up everywhere!

I wouldn't be worried about those at all. I would be looking for other signs that would be more worrying eg. Wider cracks, cracks running downwards from tops of doorways. Cracks outside through the brickwork

NetballHoop · 08/01/2022 20:56

It's been there for around 50 years now. If there're no external signs of movement I wouldn't worry.

Sorry to sidetrack the thread -

@ManchesterTartwithCustard: do you mean between the door and the ceiling and what is the issue with vertical cracks like these? Thank you

saleorbouy · 08/01/2022 22:21

They look like minor plaster cracks. Check the brickwork externally to see if there is anything corresponding on the outside.
Are there any trees close to the house?
I wouldn't be worried otherwise.

Thanks for your responses, they've put my mind at rest.
