Convert scatter back sofa to full back?

Has anyone changed their sofa to a full back? We've had our sofas a while now, and i absolutely hate the scatter back cushions. The children sit on the top of them squashing them all out if shape. I'm fed up of repositioning them 20 times a day, and really, really regret having them.

We can't afford to replace the sofas, and other than my dislike of the back cushions there's nothing wrong with it.

Following as I have exactly the same issue - HATE those cushions! Angry

Those low back sofas have wrecked my back, just awaiting spine surgery aged 48! Seriously look at sofas with higher back/neck support.

What are your initial thoughts? Foam is quite expensive....but you can probably find an upholster to do this for you in a similar or contrasting fabric....or were you thinking of DIY?

i took mine off but the back of my sofa is fully upholstered( padded and covered) so the back cushions were really optional. If you want to solve the problem on the cheap, I would get lots of velcro and a big throw. Velcro the cushions to the back. Put a throw right over the cushions and right down to the bottom of the sofa at the back. This is to stop the kids just taking the cushions off. You can get upholstery material online that you might want to use as a throw. Upholstery material is usually thick and hard wearing and you might be able to find some that matches in with the rest of the sofa. You can pin the throw material to the sofa. You can get upholstery pins that are like heavy duty drawing pins. I would also buy the kids their own floor cushions to squash while I lay down on the sofa admiring my DIY upholstery work. You can get foam/replacement cushions online both covered/uncovered and fairly economically. You would need something pretty solid. Ones that are just foam wear really quickly and aren't comfy.

Depends how high you want the back to be compared to how high the existing back of the sofa is.

It can be done either way but it's a lot more work if the back is really low & not something you would want to take on.

If you just want a back with cushions that's around the same height or up to around 6 inches or so higher than the back you already have, just measure, decide if you want 2 back cushions or 3 (or 4 depending on sofa size) & take those measurements to a foam shop.
They can advise you on which firm foam to get & cut to size (& shape if you have arms that you want the ends of the cushions to go over - you'd need to make a template & bring it with you for that) for your back cushions, then just make them some covers in a fabric you like & you're done.

The back of the sofa isn't that low, I've been looking on scs etc as they have a replacement cushion service, you just select the type of foam and mot in all the measurements. I would then buy upholstery fabric and have the foam covered.

If you make the covers yourself, cover the foam in wadding (aka batting) before putting the cover on - makes the cushion more comfy, softens the edges & helps prevent the covers slipping.

Can I ask how did you get on with this op? I am hoping to do the exact same thing. ,8 year old pillow back and have put up with it long enough. It's a 4 seater. I have a 3 seater as well bought at same time but it has the fixed proper back on it. Am hoping to use the ones from that as a template to get ones made for the pillow back.

This is exactly why we didn’t go for the scatter back although my concern was for DP 😂 I knew he would pile the cushions up in a way that was comfy but looked a mess and worried about them going flat and losing shape as you have said.

It’s a shame really because I do think the scatter backs look lovely but they aren’t practical at all. We went for full back and then bought lots of cushions.

Depends where you bought it from I think. We got out sofa from SCS in November and I was really impressed with their aftercare service. I called them saying that one of the cushions was “too squishy” and they sent an upholsterer round to fix it for me and it’s brilliant now

if you have a boatyard or camping supply shop nearby, they sometimes do foam cushions to measure.

in that case measure the size you want. maybe buy suitable fabric for it separately and have cushion&cover made to measure.

Has anyone done this
