Ottoman bed - would you recommend?

We're thinking about getting an ottoman bed for our master bedroom and I have little experience with them and would love some first hand stories. Do they break easily? Are they comfy? How do you use them? Where did you buy one?

Or is it a terrible idea and I should just buy a wooden bed frame?

We love our ottoman bed, so much so that when we replaced our single spare bed, we had an ottoman in there too. It gives us so much additional storage and looks very slick. I hate to see storage boxes under beds but the ottoman allows us to utilise the space and still look stylish. Our master bedroom one came from Costco because we saw it and really liked the style and the single in the spare bedroom came from Dreams.

We have one in each of our 2 spare rooms, they're okay. One broke within the first few months. They're a pain in the arse to lift up (you have to lift the whole top half of the frame with the mattress on which can be really heavy). I personally wouldn't use it for the master though, I'd rather have a proper bed frame. We find the ottoman frame has a habit of 'clunking' when someone moves in the night.

This was the Dreams one. Sturdy and easy to use.

The Costco one I can't see on their website anymore but it was a while ago. We had one which fully lifted rather than the half ones they show now.

So many places do them now but the quality does differ, so I'd suggest going to have a look in a showroom so you can see it once you've had a look online. Some looked nice on the website but then in real life looked cheap. Also you can try out the lifting mechanism to see if it feels sturdy.

I love ours - so much storage underneath. Never noticed it making a noise as we move - and ours have been through 3 house moves!

CandyCaneLane0 · 01/01/2022 12:01

I love mine, so much storage space, I'd never have anything but an ottoman now

AuntieMarys · 01/01/2022 12:03

I have 2. Great for storage.

Mumdiva99 · 01/01/2022 12:05

We've used them on holiday. I think they are great. I never noticed any odd noises and so much space under them.

PeonyAndSweetpea · 01/01/2022 13:50

I have an IKEA one....it was in the master bedroom but when we moved it went into one of the guest rooms.

It is fabulous, it's very sturdy, the lifting mechanism is good (yes it can be a bit heavy to start, but that's just inertia) and us very comfortable.....no strange noises from it either. It stores loads underneath. I love it.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 01/01/2022 13:53

We have a king with 4 individual drawers underneath. The base is sturdy, the drawers are great. As long as you don't fill them with stuff and forget about it!

JerkintheMerkin · 01/01/2022 13:56

I have the IKEA one as well. The space underneath is insane. Also bought the single one for DD. Does a very good job of hiding her junk toys Grin. Never noticed any movement/weakness as such but alas mine doesn't receive any sort of action Wink

R0BYN · 01/01/2022 14:00

They are really useful and not heavy or noisy if you get a good quality mechanism.

We use ours for out of season clothing and spare bedlinen for guests - so the kind of things you need a few times a year. You wouldn’t use it for items you need regularly.

TwoBlueFish · 01/01/2022 14:06

We love ours, huge amount of storage (we use ours for bedding, spare quilts, pillows, towels, etc. Never noticed any noise when we’re in it and it’s very comfy. Ours is a super long with a deep mattress so it is a little bit heavy but nothing major.

We also bought a cheaper one for DS, his has material on the bottom rather than solid like ours and feels a bit cheaper but again is great for storage.

Twilight7777 · 01/01/2022 14:08

I have one that you lift up and there’s space underneath, it’s great for Hiding Christmas presents

MariaDingbat · 01/01/2022 22:00

Thanks everyone! That's all really helpful, we're going to head to Dreams on Monday to have a nosy at some ottomans.

wishingitwasfriday · 01/01/2022 22:15

Ours is from tempur and it's a fab bed. The extra storage is amazing and it's not too heavy when lifting.

user290814356289 · 01/01/2022 22:17

Ds has one. It's the best thing ever. Dd will also have one when she's a bit older.

TheFlis12345 · 01/01/2022 22:39

We got the Dreams Classic a few months ago and it’s amazing, so much storage, very sturdy and well made.

Hollytreenew · 01/01/2022 23:01

I have the Dreams Isabella one and I love it. It’s been through a few house moves, I don’t think it will last another though. It gives a lot of storage. I would say that it is for things you don’t want to use all the time as mentioned above.
I also love the headboard on it as it is really comfy to lean on when you sit up in bed as is it slightly curved but also smooth. So comfortable.
Happy hunting on Monday!

MustDust · 01/01/2022 23:07

We have the Garcia from Furniture Village, I sat on so many as my one requisite is no noise and this one passed the test. DS has a cheapie from Ebay and both have the ikea hovag mattress on. I'm waiting for the other bed to die and that'll be replaced with one too.

Hebeee · 01/01/2022 23:56

We have a super king ottoman bed from Dreams in the main bedroom and love it because it has loads of storage space. The mattress (from Sealy) was purchased separately.

No noises or issues with the mechanism. We use it to store spare bedding, cushions etc. Previously we've had one with the drawers rather than the lift up type and didn't like that....

I bought an ottoman bed from Sueno.co.uk

It can be heavy depending on your mattress, but it’s great for storing extra clothes, bedding and suitcases, and combined with the mattress, it’s higher than my previous beds.

MariaDingbat · 25/07/2024 09:51

We went and had a good look at some ottoman beds in dreams and a few other places, but unfortunately they were all a bit cumbersome to use. Plus our bedroom is on the eaves and we realised the bed frame would probably hit the ceiling on one side when it was fully opened. That, and the weight of a horsehair mattress, meant an ottoman bed was not suitable. We ended up getting a great solid wood bed from laRedoute and some lovely fabric underbed storage boxes instead.
