Steamy windows

Has anyone had success replacing window panes in double glazed units rather than the whole window frame?

We are getting our house in shape with a view to selling but I don't think
it will be cost effective to replace the lot so wondered if this could be the way to go.

Yes,you can buy new sealed units for frames

I had 2 panes of glass replaced both with leaded lights and I think it cost me about £150 in the Midlands. They are fine, I am going to have a couple more done this year.

Thank you both. Anymore successes or failures please.

yes, it's easy. There are bound to be local specialists in your area, replacing blown units and repairing plastic doors. Happens all the time.

The first call will be to measure your units, she will then order them from a local glazing supplier (they are made to order in a big factory) then a second call to fit them. Quite a few can be done in a day. I think I paid about £50 per pane, but it will vary by size and location. A patio door was several hundred (I ordered it in laminated glass which cost about double).

If I'd known how simple it was I wouldn't have put up with them.

Mine was recommended by my window cleaner. You will doubtless find your neighbours have used someone so try to get a personal recommendation. You don't need a big company. It's a trade no more complex than a plumber or carpenter.

It’s easy, we had a whole bay done in a morning. Local glazing company.

FuglyHouse · 06/01/2022 10:26

We got a local double glazing company to do ours. It took literally minutes per window!

Dougieowner · 06/01/2022 20:06

How old are the windows?
Most companies provide a 10-year warranty which covers failed sealed units, had a few replaced in my old house with no quibbling.

Just had our bathroom window unit done by a local man. £80.

You don't want to hear about the failures, nothing to do with the failed units we had replaced. Used same company over 8 years, same workforce, they are small local company to me

Thank you everyone. Definitely will look into having this done.
