Different types of windows?!?

We're hoping to move into a new property (new to us) early in the new year and just trying to work our priority and costs for the numerous upgrades it needs. The property was built c.1970 and has original wooden, single glazed (hideous and rotten) windows. We will be looking to update these soon. My mind is a bit blown by different types of windows available and I'm not sure of price point/longevity etc of each. We will be getting quotes but wanted a bit of a steer. We've always had newish houses with UPVC but I don't really think these will suit the house, unless they've come a long way in recent years. It's an arts and craft style house so I think cottage style would probably suit best but what material? I'm assuming wooden is most expensive and UPVC cheapest?? Where would aluminium and composite fit on this scale? Any advice would be really helpful.

We’ve had timberlook windows installed in our cottage as the cost of wood windows (especially for our very old wonky, non- standard sized cottage) was just through the roof and would require a lot of maintenance.

We are really pleased with them. Basically a flush UVPC double glazed that looks like wood.
