I am thinking about the design -
a) L shape
b) L shape and Ireland
c) U shape ( with openings into 2 different options

really pazzled which one would be better, generally we have 45 sq m extension built, and trying to have half of the area living space and half
kitchen dining open space

I attach the deigns
please help me with your thoughts and opinions

thank you

For me the most important things are the storage and the work top space and also the natural light. If possible, I prefer to have the table near a window. Do you have glass doors to the garden or do you have a window?

plnning bifolds into the garden or French door

Honestly I'd cut the living space to maybe just a sofa and coffee table and increase the kitchen / dining space.

Of your 4, the L shape doesn't have enough storage / worktop. L plus island is an improvement. The top right u shape looks as though the dining area could be cramped - we used to have a similar layout and it was a pain. Bottom right would be my preference but maybe extend kitchen units to the left of the oven and move the table to the middle opposite the door, sofa in the bit we can't see.

thank you so much, Exquisitely Decorated

  • so the L with Ireland is not as practical as U with passway near the door ( Bottom right?)
  • Bottom right design - - I just thought if I walk into the room with the shopping etc, I have to go round the U shape, to get to h kitchen

I will try now to attach another plan o that you can see the whole area we have

i just uploaded the whole layout of the extension total around 5.5 by 7.5 metres inside the extension area, I also want to fit in sofas and big coffee table for doing rafts etc with children,

maybe some desk with computer for any online meetings, day to day work... not sure about this one actually)

Could you do your crafts at the dining table instead? We bought a big coffee table for this sort of thing (jigsaws, crafts) but always ended up using the dining table instead. Kids don't stay at coffee-table working height for many years.

So maybe a desk in the bottom left corner (but again we've got one and end up using the kitchen table most of the time). A couple of armchairs either side of it and a sofa against the LH wall, table and chairs in the middle, replace the peninsula with the island but also have units the whole length of the RH side.

We've had a similar sized extension to yours just done but we're narrower and longer. 4.5 x 10. We just have it as a kitchen diner, there's no way we could fit living space in there too. With such a lovely big space you don't want to put too much in and it feel cramped.

My daughter had two friends over yesterday and they did crafts at the dining table and it worked great.

The only way it would have worked would be to have a u shaped kitchen with the table in the middle (like an island) and then use the other half for living but I do feel it would be a bit chaotic and you'd sacrifice adequate storage

I thought to have sofa,s but facing l.H wall, so the TV on the L.H wall, so the sofa would be facing other way from the kitchen, iyswim?

I think you are trying to squeeze too much in. Do you need a 6 seater dining table all the time? Perhaps if not a round 4 seater that extends to an oval 6 seater for guests. Same with sofas, how many seats do you need? A two seater with back to the kitchen plus an armchair each end could work.

SwedishEdith · 30/12/2021 18:45

think you are trying to squeeze too much in. definitely if including Ireland.

BewareTheRedNosedDragon · 30/12/2021 19:35

Of the 4 pics of designs the one in the bottom right corner looks like it would work best. Though I'd be a bit concerned about having the door right next to the peninsula.
Also - Ireland is the country, an island in in your kitchen Smile
