Hi. We're renovating a house and getting so confused about how to select a fireplace mantel. We're trying to DIY as need to save money but don't understand how to find a mantel that fits the fire opening. The fire opening is 51cm across and 83cm high and is currently just an open space. All mantels seem to be much wider than that but we want the distance between the opening and the mantel to be the same at the top and the sides. Are we missing something?

Also keen for any interior design ideas. The house is 1950s so we want it to be modern. We already have solid oak floating shelves so wanted a proper mantel either than a floating shelf mantel. We're not going to put in an actual fire of any kind as we have two kids under 2.5.

Please help. We're rather clueless!

If you're relatively handy at DIY, you can make one quite easily. Here's one example

The gap in distance is because there are usually some tiles between wooden surround and fire to prevent the wood from burning.
