Hello all,

I am sooooo confused. I have made post previously about moving out of London next year but the more I research on where to move to, the more confused I become.

I have listed the areas I would like to move to above. The only area above where I have family is in Yorkshire.

My budget is £260 max and I would like a 3 bedroom. I have an 8 year old son and I would like him to engage in activities such as football because he is already playing.

I don't mind any of the areas and I am not fussy about restaurants etc because I am a homely person.

Please someone should advise me. I just want somewhere good where I can settle.

Many thanks

@CrazyHorse

there’s an awful lot of single man who rent rooms in the area not particularly families Seriously? Maybe in the town center of Rugby to a certain extent, but Hillmorton, Bilton, Coton Meadows, Cawston, Houlton are all stuffed with families. And there are definitely football teams for children.
Where i live is on your list, such is the demand every 3 bed semi i viewed had a landlord waving their cash offers around. I doubt the plan is to rent that to a family for £800 who you cant easily evict v’s 3 men at £400 per month who you can remove with a weeks notice.

If probably give Derby a miss too. A few nice suburbs but the city centre is dire these days.

CorrBlimeyGG · 27/12/2021 13:28

Trying to work out if your friend that recommended Mansfield really dislikes you!

Sodthebloodypicnic · 27/12/2021 13:39

Definitely not Mansfield and tbh I would also say no to Derby as they're both grim.

See a pp has beat me to it in reccomending Newark which is a lovely town with trains to London and Yorkshire.

If you want grammar schools tho I'd say go to Grantham. Similarly useful location train and roadwise as Newark but has excellent grammar schools and good local football clubs.

In general, we've found the east coast mainline trains to the Midlands work out cheaper. I used to live 20-30mins from Newark Leicester Grantham Loughborough and Nottingham stations and it's always cheaper to go from Newark or Grantham to London.

Kings is a C of E school, so its entry criteria prioritises church going. There’s also a small number of academic and music places.

Children from Peterborough do go to Bourne Grammar.

Oh my days, is it that bad there? Thank God I posted this because I was considering Mansfield. Thanks a lot

Thank you. I really appreciate it. That's Mansfield and Derby out of my list. So helpful

Yes definitely a frenemy. Nobody who liked you would ever recommend it

jackstini · 27/12/2021 17:24

Lots of lovely places in Nottinghamshire but Mansfield isn't one of them!

If you want a town then Newark or West Bridgford. Lots of lovely villages too

South Yorkshire could be a good option with family there though

QueenFool · 27/12/2021 17:25

How about Belper, Ashbourne , Bakewell or Buxton, Derbyshire? All in or near the Derbyshire Dales and Peak District? Decent sized towns.

Or would you prefer something more city like?

Schmoozer · 27/12/2021 17:31

You’ve picked a huge chunk of England there !!
May wish to narrow it down ?
Some good areas in Leicestershire-
Grammar schools in Leicester - but the city is not great -
In the Leicestershire county there are great towns - Burbage, mkt harbrough, Lutterworth, Narborough, Hinckley
Just over an hour into central London on train too

Another vote for the Colne Valley.

Marsden is great.

And Holmfirth.

I am now wondering if it's a case of misery likes company. But I am glad that I asked.

I wonder was your friend thinking more of somewhere like Edwinstowe near Mansfield, which is quite a nice village.

Peterborough is ok, I grew up just outside it. The best thing is the transport links north and south. There are plenty of lovely villages around it such as Glinton, old Werrington, Bainton, Barnack and Helpston. Market Deeping is pleasant, as are all the Deepings.

augustusglupe · 27/12/2021 17:43

Another with a recommendation to stay well away from Mansfield.
Newark, West Bridgford (although pricey) and most of the villages between Bingham and Grantham are lovely. Also the suburbs of Nottingham...Beeston, Chilwell are good family areas.

Is there any particular area of Newark? Thanks

No, she was very clear that it was Mansfield. She has not mentioned anywhere else within Nottingham.

We're in Peterborough too. I recommend Orton Longueville, Waterville and Wistow to the other areas mentioned. Children do get into Bourne Grammar from the city. King's is not impossible to get into but it is tough. Peterborough has really suited us as a family. Lots to do and easy access to London.

Leeds or Nottingham!

namechangeagain32 · 27/12/2021 20:05

Peterborough gets a bad rap but I think it's an underrated city. For me it has a bit of everything; culture, history, easy access to countryside, good amenities and restaurants, good transport links, the transport infrastructure in the city itself is great- the road network makes it the fastest moving city in rush hour. It's just a shame the council is a bit of a shambles at the moment and it seems to have been hit quite hard in the pandemic, lots of significant closures over the last year in the cultural and commercial sector, but with it's affordability and proximity to London I think it will bounce back.

Thank you- I think from the comments so far, I am looking at Newark and or Yorkshire. I found some properties in Mirfield which seems nice and it's not far from Leeds. But I do not know that area at all. I will arrange and visit both Newark and Yorkshire. Thanks for your time

Hello,
No I have not even though my friend moved to Sleaford which is in Lincolnshire, in July and she seems to like it there. I have been there twice to visit but I did not even think about moving/living there.
