Infra-red panel experiences

We are thinking of an Infra-red panel on the kitchen instead of a radiator due to space.
Would love to hear your experiences

Anyone?

I had these in a rental flat which had no gas. You can get them as mirrored panels so in the living room and bedrooms they looked like wall mirrors (full length in bedroom). Or a plain white panel. They worked great, but they do get a bit hot (just like a radiator). I used Herschel.

They do work, but they are far from ideal. The biggest problem is you're just converting electricity directly into heat, just as you would with a £15 fan heater, which is very costly. There are no efficiency advantages like you get with a heat pump, and no advantages of cheapness of the source energy like with gas central heating.

Gas is being phased out so it is the cleanest energy, though I agree not the cheapest. It is efficient however, and Housebuilding and Renovating magazine states that in a cost comparison, infrared was more expensive to run than gas, about half the cost of electric night storage heaters and significantly less than an air source heat pump.

Thanks for the feed back. Dh is pushing for one but I am not sure. Gas being phased out is the worry. We are hoping the solar panels help absorb any extra costs. It is all a bit if a balancing act.

Unfortunately solar output doesn't align at all with when you want heating (in the winter) - any offset is negligible.
It will be many decades before gas is phased out- I honestly wouldn't consider that at this stage. Any IR panel you fit now will be long burnt out, in landfill and replaced, possibly more than once, before the gas is turned off :D

I have one from Warm4Less. Like you I was limited for wall space and I live in an area without gas so less options.
I like it. Especially now my desk is under it. Feels like sitting in the sun.
It probably isn't as effective as a radiator but for 700w it works well as far as electrical options are concerned and the picture is lovely

Thanks @ Calmdown14 good to hear.
We are not in the UK and the plan here is to phase out gas. The prices have gone crazy to convince everyone to move to electricity

I would also be interested. In my case there is a radiator in the room so this would be an addition to use on winter evenings.
