Total kitchen counter length

We are planning our kitchen and struggling to visualise space and don’t want to be left with not enough counter space for food prep, kettles/toasters etc.

Anyone happy to share approx what their total counter length is, including island space? Please mention if you include the hob/sink in the length so I can do an approx subtraction.

TIA

Ours is approx 10.5m (excl. sink / hob). U shaped with peninsular, no island. Gives us plenty of prep room.

Another approx 5m in the utility.

Should say we keep very little on the sides - even the toaster goes in a cupboard.

Wow, that’s impressive- must be a huge kitchen!

It’s a nice sized room - family / diner + the kitchen.

The u shape is also quite an efficient use of space :)

How much space will you have? I always think a good m or so either side of sink & hob makes a big difference - it’s no good just having the space, it needs to be in a useful place too.

We've got about 5m in the kitchen including 0.8m hob, 0.55m sink. It also includes a small island 1.2m long, so that bit has extra depth at 0.9m.

There's another 2.5m in the utility room.

We find we have plenty of space - there's a 1m section that never gets used really, except for putting a fruit bowl there! If we had twice as much, we'd find it that much harder to keep the place vaguely tidy....

There are a couple of other factors to take into account, e.g. will you have a built in microwave oven or will that take up worktop space?

noworklifebalance · 19/12/2021 07:19

@CasperGutman - microwave on the counter but plan on having toaster & coffee machine in a cupboard/pantry, hot water tap (no kettle)
We definitely won’t be able to have 10m of counter space or metre either side of sink/hob - currently have approx 60-80cm

I missed this post @CasperGutman - that’s good to know, as I think that is probably what we will manage but was worried that we may regret not trying to work in more counter space.

I plan on having lots of storage, similar to the floor to ceiling cupboards in the attachment so I hope most things can be put away(!). Currently, in the same place, we have a worktop with cupboards underneath and glass front cabinets above. The counter turns into a dumping ground for piles of letters, papers, lego, toys and it drives me mad and so I am determined not to have counter space there.

My needs/wants are prep space (island);
space by the hob to have food, spices, utensils to hand whilst cooking;
space near the oven to put hot things down straight from it without having to wander around the kitchen

Not keen on open shelves - love the look but not practical for us (cleaning/dusting it, more space to dump stuff)
