Cock (caulk) for skirting boards.

Hi,

I just had skirting board fitted in our house, and the fitter said "In a few days time, gets some cock and apply it to the top to fill the gap between the skirting board and the wall." Which made me chuckle.

I think he probably meant caulk, but I just wondered if anybody might know which is the good kind to buy? Our walls are plaster skimmed and the skirting is particle board.

Thanks!

Decorators cock lol. Yes caulk is the correct term. Most caulk is pretty much the same, just make sure it’s over paintable. it’s cheap as chips but you’ll need a cartridge gun, also just a few quid. It’s to fill any tiny gap you have along the corner where the surfaces join. You only need a tiny amount, and once you’ve laid a bit along the join use your finger to smooth it off. You don’t want great gobs of it though. Also when you’re using the cartridge gun, press the little button on the end otherwise it’ll keep coming out.

Probably good to check YouTube so you can see what I mean.

Perhaps he was suggesting something entirely different Grin

Yes it's caulk Smile and the fitter should have done it surely, even if he'd had to come back in a few days. I always make a dog's dinner of it though and wouldn't want to be expected to do it myself.

StrongLegs · 07/12/2021 12:23

LOL!

Thanks, Lonelycrab I'll have a look.

We had skirting before and I just ignored the cracks so we have lots of this that needs doing. I had better get lots. :-)

You’ll be surprised how far one tube goes unless the gaps are really big so don’t go and buy a box full or something! Good luckSmile

StrongLegs · 07/12/2021 12:28

Thanks, I've just bought the one tube.

I did a lot of caulking yesterday. I find it strangely satisfying and it makes a massive difference to the quality of the finish for the small amount of effort involved. I basically wander round the house sticking my caulk in any small cracks I see.

@IamwhoIsayIam
Oh me too. Definitely 'up there' with one of my most satisfying things to do! Watched a ton of YouTube videos on it (some decorator chap called Charlie I think) anyway, really helpful 😁

@IamwhoIsayIam do you mean cock or caulk?

Dogsanddrums · 08/12/2021 13:38

I cracked the technique after caulking our whole house - do the line of caulk, dip finger in water, wipe away excess with wet finger, clean finger & repeat. The water stops it from sticking to your skin too much and going bumpy.

IamwhoIsayIam · 08/12/2021 13:55

@MrsMoastyToasty I slipped that in for my own amusement, I'm glad it was spotted Wink
