Hello everyone!

I am posting this here because you guys have been so nice with giving advice and sharing your own experiences.

My cousin has decided to move out of London with her two young children aged 5,7. She is looking to buying but she is considering Nottingham, Grantham and or rugby. We don't have any family in any of these areas so she would like some advice.

From speaking with her, I think Nottingham is her top choice for now. She has visited all 3 places so far and her budget is £260k

Would you lovely people advice on which areas of Nottingham is good?

All depends what the requirements are. West Bridgford is seen as the place to be.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/12/2021 11:09

I second Westbridgford. Wollaton is nice, as is Mapperly. I live in Lenton and love it. It's so convenient. But very studenty.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/12/2021 11:09

Beeston and Chillwell also decent areas.

DeliaDinglehopper · 07/12/2021 11:11

Grantham probably has the better Trainline down to London. She may struggle for school places in West Bridgford.

What does she want from where she’s living? That may give some indicators for where to live.

Thank you- she is currently renting in London and the 1bedroom she is renting is £1500 monthly. She wants space for her kids but also wants good schools and she wants one of her kids, who is a boy to engage in activities such as football.

She has seen a property in Grantham and Rugby. She is not set and stone but she would like somewhere she can travel to London easily as well because we have family in London.
Thank you

I live halfway between Nottingham and Derby. I agree with the areas mentioned. I worked in Nottingham In education and I can honestly I've never been in a more friendly, tolerant place and I've lived in London and several cities and small towns.

Theres lots of open space and parks, the river and canals. Shopping is great and good cafes, bars and restaurants. Theatre and music venue art galleries. There's some lovely countryside all around.

There is crime in Nottingham and gangs but it's still a very pleasant place to live and work

Turquoisesea · 07/12/2021 15:21

West Bridgford is lovely but closer to town so a bit more expensive. If she’s looking for a more of a village then there is Radcliffe-on-Trent, Bingham, East Bridgford, Ruddington which are all nice areas.

FAQs · 07/12/2021 15:22

Grantham has the grammar school system of that makes any difference?

FAQs · 07/12/2021 15:22

*if

Livelifeinthebuslane · 07/12/2021 15:35

How will she travel to London? The train is much cheaper from Rugby (if you get the slower one!) if that's a factor.

Onehotmess · 07/12/2021 15:38

She will also struggle to buy a house in WB for 260. Depending on size she requires. You’d get more for your money in other places; keyworth, cotgrave for example.
Ozanj · 07/12/2021 15:40

Between Rugby and Northampton could give her that plus the cheaper commute to London.

Grantham is very small and the shops and restaurants are all a bit shit. Housing is good and cheap and it's on the A1 straight down to London. But the terrible shops and poor restaurants and bars would make me take my money to Nottingham any day.

BurbageBrook · 07/12/2021 15:50

Grantham is a lot rougher than Nottingham. There are some lovely suburbs and villages in south Nottinghamshire.

GerbilCurse · 07/12/2021 16:12

West Bridgford is overrated imo and house prices reflect that. If she wants to be closer to the city centre, I'd look at Beeston/Chilwell. Tram and train access into town, can catch a train to London directly from Beeston.

If she wants to be more rural then Bingham area. Bingham also has a train station so can get the train into Nottingham or to Grantham if wanting to go to London.

Imdoingitnow · 07/12/2021 17:04

Near to west bridgford is Lady bay which is lovely as is sherwood

DeliaDinglehopper · 07/12/2021 17:59

Lady bay got a bit stuck for secondary school places this year. Lots of complaints locally.

It sounds like most people are in favour of Nottinghamshire. Can I ask which you all would go for? Nottinghamshire or Leicestershire. Now I am the one considering Leicestershire but I am as blind as my cousin because we do not know any of these places but we are desperate to leave London. I also do not want to make a mistake.

The response on this thread seems more positive about Nottinghamshire

West Bridgford, Gamston, Mapperley and Beeston are nice. You can get a direct train from Beeston to London.

TheCreamCaker · 07/12/2021 18:29

I've lived in Nottingham all my life. Decent areas include:

Redhill, Arnold, Calverton, Ravenshead, Papplewick, Linby, and then the other side of town - Bunny, Tollerton, Keyworth

Iamanicepersonreally · 07/12/2021 18:30

Bingham and some of the surrounding villages are lovely. Sherwood is good for shopping but I wouldn't choose it as somewhere to live.

Ozanj · 07/12/2021 18:56

Leicestershire’s lovely. Has a lot of outstanding school areas in the North and South but these do come with a bit of a price tag. You can expect to pay 420-450 for a small-average sized 4 bed detached in Rushey Mead / Oadby / Highfields / Evington. It’s cheaper in the countryside but Leicestershire does have a bit of a divide there amongst rich and poor in the more rural areas. So it does depend on budget.

DeliaDinglehopper · 11/12/2021 18:35

Aslockton (Archbishop Cranmer) between Bingham and Grantham has just been rated one of the top primary schools in the country.
