2nd Property incase one of us needs space

Since this pandemic things in our house have changed alot. WFH and being under each others feet 24/7.

We have a dd7 and sometimes things can get abut tense at home.

We are lucky enough to have a flat we rent out around the corner from our main house. We are thinking of having that as a 2nd home, just so one of us can have some space/alone time.

Does anyone else have this and if so how does it work for your family 👪

It seems a strange and expensive solution. Wouldn’t it be more efficient to rent an office space / use a hot dealing facility like We Work so that you’re not crammed in the house together all day? Or build a garden office / studio which you can use as a getaway?

If you're rich as Midas go for it. In my house we'd both be clambering to escape the stress of family life and it'd probably cause huge arguments. Plus double the domestic and mental load.

Fucking hell, what housing crisis, eh

I’d love that personally. Routine kills romance and some distance is good in a marriage in my opinion.

I think the flat would be a relationship sticking plaster.

I think you would be better getting some marriage counselling and deciding if you can be together long term.

If you do decide to separate, then it's fantastic you have the flat and that it's near to the house.

I know three couples who have had a similar arrangement whilst married (two raising children). It’s unconventional and expensive, but if you can afford it and it works for you, why not. Pandemic working might not be forever though, and it will be double the cleaning, etc. Are you sure a single, larger home (perhaps with a garden office) would t solve this problem?

My friend works in her garden shed - has done for the last 15 years. When lockdown happened that made it easier for her husband to then work from home too. So a separate space, but I'd not give up the rent from a separate flat.
