Renting in Wales

My husband has been offered a job in south Wales and we have been looking at houses to rent but keep being knocked back. We viewed a property last week and were told there was one other person interested that they chased up after we expressed interest. They got it over us. We had another one today where someone else who viewed after us got it because the landlord said she felt sorry for them. I'm not so mad about that one. They must have had a genuine housing need and I'd rather not take that away from them. I'm just wondering if it's because we are not local. Is this a thing?! We both have good jobs, have 10 years tenancy on our current place and have enough to put 6 months rent upfront for the sake of relocating. In the city where we currently live it's all about getting in there quick and offering the landlord the best deal financially but I can't help but wonder if we are in for a struggle because we are not local. We need to be in by January at the clock it ticking for us to find somewhere! Need help.

Where in South Wales are you looking? I wouldn’t have thought it was because you’re not local, but could depend on the area.

I wouldn’t have thought it was because you’re not local. Where are you looking? If Cardiff I know the market is crazy right now, right across from Newport down to the vale of Glamorgan anyway. If it IS Cardiff there is a certain agency with a heart in their logo that you should avoid like the plague, they’ve been featured on BBC X-Ray multiple times.
