Our vendors’ solicitor is awful.

Vendors are abroad and have been instructing him from The US. At the start, we thought they (vendors) were being difficult as there were constant delays but it turns out that it’s the solicitor who has been delaying everything.

We were meant to close two months ago but he caused a significant delay and then went AWOL- he was on holiday and didn’t inform anyone.

He doesn’t “do” email so our poor solicitor has bent over backwards trying to manage postal correspondence from him. She has told me that he’s farcical and she would be tearing her hair out in our position.

He has an administrator who works part-time (Tues/Weds/Thurs) so, if something doesn’t get done by Thursday, we’re waiting nearly a week for an update.

He won’t speak to the estate agent. He seems to have a chip on his shoulder and will only communicate with our solicitor, or his clients.

Our solicitor has complained and he’s given her a very patronizing response. I’d say she’s rueing the day I ever asked her to manage this purchase for us.

We’ve complained to our vendors but they’re not listening. They’ve said they know he’s “old school” but they’re too far in with him now so just need to get it over the line.
We’ve threatened to pull out but they know it’s an empty threat- we went sale agreed 8 months ago (no chain either side) and the market here is absolutely booming so they would likely get more money if they put it back on the market.

Anyway, the end is in sight but I’m sooooo fucking frustrated with this man.

I feel for you. I suspect you can't complain to the solicitor's professional body if you aren't the actual client, though I feel you should be able to. Anyone know if you can?

Funnily enough, I asked my solicitor and she wasn’t 100% sure but also thought that I couldn’t raise a complaint as I’m not his client.

She also asked me what I hoped to achieve, which is actually a fair question as, at this stage, it’s likely to just make him more difficult and delay things even further.

Might send him a glitter dick bomb.

Or wait until afterwards and then put in a complaint (if you can).
Solicitors seldom advise you to complain about other solicitors. >: /

Our buyers had the worst solicitor on the planet too, why they didn’t check the reviews I have no idea, but it certainly was his usual modus operandi. Caused the whole chain no end of stress. The solicitor, in question was so rude to mine, totally unacceptable, she was the nicest woman, doing her job, I know without doubt, she did nothing to deserve such rudeness. But it is worth it, to move in the end. Sending you a hug OP, I know how stressful moving is.

You have to complain to the firm first of all, before you can escalate to legal ombudsman.

Your solicitor needs to ask him for a copy of the complaints procedure. He has to have one, by law.

You could ask your solicitor for help with the complaint. She may enjoy providing you with a template and examples of his incompetence!

Not using email in this day and age is insanity. I think your best argument is to say that by failing to use basic electronic communication he is failing to act in the best interests of his client.

Defo complain- people like this give the profession a bad reputation!
