Areas around Southampton?

Hi everyone!
Looking for somewhere to buy with good links to Basingstoke. We also need to get to the South Coast (West Sussex) fairly easily. We need somewhere with good access to urban areas.
We toyed with Southampton as it has great train links to Basingstoke/Winchester, Winchester itself is very expensive. We also considered some of the Surrey/Sussex border villages but the roads are not very good.

Any suggestions, we are quite invested in outskirts of Southampton.

Botley, Warsash Titchfield, Stubbington?

Chandlers Ford? On M3. Are schools a consideration? Because if so, Thornden in Chandlers Ford is one of the best state secondaries in Hampshire.

Rownhams, Basset, Romsey Chandlers Ford, Shirley

Name changed so I can be helpful. I’d recommend Highfield, Bassett, Upper Shirley or Bitterne if you’re looking at Southampton. What are your considerations re: work? Are you likely to need to use the train at all?

I love Highfield, we have lived here for many years, and I’ve lived within walking distance of the uni since I was a student. It’s a great place to live, the city centre might not be beautiful, but it has good amenities, and some hidden gems if you care to look around the more historic parts.

Highfield has a really great village feel, is quite pretty and is sandwiched between the common and Portswood high street which is vibrant, and 30 minutes walk to the city centre, and good primary schools. Upper Shirley and Bitterne also good on the schools front, Bassett less so.

What is your budget? Because that affects things slightly.

The outskirts of Southampton are also fine, but imo they tend to be quite similar to any other suburban area.

Thanks What do people do about schools if living in Bassett?

I used to go to Southampton fairly often

Then I was sent a link to 'Hampshire news'. I suggest you don't start reading it.

I always stayed in the city, so don't know any of the surrounding areas, but wish you the best of luck finding a place you love. If it was me I'd rent first.

@Ohwhere2021 the friends I have in Basset do a variety of things about school: some do use the local primary; others moved to Bassett from somewhere with better schools, keeping their places; some have secured places elsewhere e.g. North Baddesley or Eastleigh; the others go private.

Thank you so much for the advice
