Reasonable cost to paint 3 bed house.

We're looking to paint our 3 bed house and have been quoted £3000 for the whole house, we're in London. Is that a fair price? If not, where can we begin to look for painters offering decent prices. Please help

Is that inside or outside the house?

Beurre · 17/11/2021 10:00

@NorthSouthcatlady - that's just inside the house.

That’s cheap. I’m paying £1500 for hall, stairs and landing papered, downstairs wet room painted and all woodwork through those areas. We’re supplying all materials too.

I booked in September and they’re coming January. That was the quickest available!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 17/11/2021 10:40

Quoted recently for 4 rooms inc window frames and ceilings (internal) was £1900 in SE so sounds about right/fairly decent quote.

caringcarer · 17/11/2021 11:18

OP you should always get 2 or 3 different quotes. Make sure you ask for exactly the same from each of them.

aradicalnotion · 17/11/2021 11:29

We're paying 3.5k for most of the house (so 3 double bedrooms, hall/stairs/landing, kitchen, dining room, sitting room, all walls, ceilings and woodwork) but that does include lots of 'making good' - sorting out blown plaster etc. We had 3 quotes, we chose the middle one as they also came good on timescales etc.

We're in the SE.

Wooky8 · 17/11/2021 11:48

Yes that's very reasonable I would say. We paid £1500 for two large rooms + hall and skirting boards/architraves throughout. And years ago £2000 for an entire (small 2bed) house.

Possiblynotever · 17/11/2021 12:51

Doing it now, same price including timber work, stairs and resealing the windows. And it was the cheapest I have found

Double3xposure · 17/11/2021 13:09

Is that 2 coat work on all walls, ceilings and woodwork ? Does it include materials ?

Beurre · 17/11/2021 20:52

Thanks for your replies. I will try to get different quotes for comparison.

@Double3xposure - it's for 2 coats of paint and I have to supply all the materials. If only my DH wasn't so lazy, we could've at least painted some of the rooms ourselves and save some much needed cash.

Just had our 3 bed done - 3 bedrooms, (1 single), hall, stairs, landing, & living room. Kitchen & bathroom were not done. All walls painted, woodwork & doors. Modern house. £1800 including all paint. We did have other quotes including one for £4100! They did an excellent job working around furniture and dd who was WFH. We did it ourselves previously but I am too old for that now!

What's stopping you doing it OP? If you say 'we' could have done it and he won't then just do it yourself :)

ilovesouthlondon · 17/11/2021 23:35

Bump

SeaisBlue · 17/11/2021 23:37

That sounds sooo cheap!!! I paid 2 k for my hallway alone (it’s fairly large and was papered - but still!!).

Beurre · 18/11/2021 09:48

@guessmyusername - that's so cheap. Where did you find your painter?

@Jasmine11 - I'm awful at painting whereas DH is great at it but would rather pay someone else to do the job. The last room I painted was so awful that my neighbour assumed my 12 year old must have done his own room 😂

Haha oh dear 😂 We are about to paint our whole house and i am worried I'm going to mess it up! But we need to save all our money for a kitchen renovation or else I'd love to pay someone else to do it. I found this thread the other day which has some really useful tips on it www.mumsnet.com/Talk/home_decoration_pictures/4068683-Painting-novice-all-your-secret-tips-please?pg=1 :)

HyphenCobra · 18/11/2021 11:43

Currently paying 3.2k for all house but only 2 of the bedrooms to be done and not all the ceilings being done as some are fine. In SE not London.

guessmyusername · 18/11/2021 12:00

@Beurre I got recommendations from a local Facebook group. I am central Scotland. I like recommendations rather than picking a name from yellow pages. But I am cautious about FB just in case it is family members recommending. So look for the same names repeated and different groups if you have them. It took me a long time to come up with my list! But we were fortunate to have time to do it. We were also getting outside paintwork done as well earlier in the summer (a separate quote) so they were getting repeat business. My next door neighbour (semi) also had his outside paintwork done at the same time.

maofteens · 18/11/2021 18:59

It also depends on the condition of your walls. Prep is very important, and decorating can be quite a skill. Your quote sounds very reasonable.
