Painting inside of front door

Quick question as Google and You Tube are just confusing me!

The inside of my front door was painted about 2 years ago in basic eggshell Matt interior wood paint. I’d like to repaint in a brighter colour. I can paint on top of the existing paint I think? Do I need to sand it down, or use primer or anything?

I want to go from mid grey to raspberry pink so don’t think I need an undercoat.

I think you need to either sand it down, then undercoat and then paint, or use a Zinsser type product. It won't 'stick' if you just paint directly.

If it's the same type of paint you're going to use then wash it down and give it a light sand, clean off with white spirit on a rag and away you go.

Thanks. I spoke to the people in the shop where I bought the paint and they said a very light sand should be fine.

I am a belt and braces type, so I would light sand but also prime with Zinsser as it is an incredible product.

Decorators daughter.

I would fill chips, rub down, light undercoat or zinsser and then top coat.

A good finish is dependent on good preparation.

Can I jump on and ask what's the difference between Zinsser 123 bulls eye and Zinsser BIN?

Somanysocks · 16/11/2021 12:32

123 is water based, BIN is shellac based so you need meths to clean the brush and is good for covering knots in the wood. They both do similar things though.

Thanks so much - 123 sounds better for me then!
