Relocating to Devon 2022 (Torquay area)

Hello.
I am relocating to Devon next year and could really do with some advice as to which areas to look at. My son is hoping to go to Torquay Boys Grammar Sept22 so I'd like somewhere he can commute to school easily but close to road links to Exeter so I can have easy access to work (though haven't got a job as yet) Ideally we'd like something with character and a decent garden .. All advice gratefully received. Also I love horse riding so any suggestions of good riding schools would be lovely.. all a bit scary :-)

Have you checked out the school coach services? They go as far as Exeter. Lots of students take the train too. Most students are from Torbay though. What other schools are you considering?

Do you want to be in a village or in a town? Coast, river or moor? What is your budget?

Hello.. thanks for the reply so far he’s just down for TBGS and Churston ferrers.. he’s had a guidance letter saying yes to both but obviously we won’t know for sure until 01.03. I don’t want him to commute to school more than half an hour as would like him to be able to catch up with friends easily as he gets older.. don’t mind where we live but not too remote snd I’d like a decent size garden .. budget around 375k (depending on what mine sells for)

I'd buy this if I had your budget (not my property btw)

The A380 is diabolical in the morning going from Torbay to Exeter (or it was pre-covid) not sure what is like now due to the volume of commenters from Torbay to Exeter (and then awful in the evening in the opposite direction). So if you will be working in Exeter you need to consider that.

Torre railway station is about 5 mins walk away and lots of children get the train.

I would possibly look at Teignmouth if you fancy by the sea or Buckfastleigh, Ashburton, or Bovey Tracey then you could use the A38 to get to Exeter. I don’t know if the A38 is as bad in the morning.

If you're going to Exeter every day then I'd try to find something on the Exeter side of Penn Inn so that you're half way between school and work. Maybe Kingsteignton or Teignmouth (can get the train to school from Teignmouth/Dawlish etc). If you don't mind the longer drive to Exeter then there are lots of lovely places in Torquay and Paignton or Newton Abbot. Don't go as far as Brixham, it's a nightmare in the summer. Totnes is ok to get to Exeter or Plymouth but will be harder for those schools.
