Buying small patch of land to access dropped kerb

I currently have parking at the front of my home for one car. Our back garden faces out onto another road and I'm considering using some of the garden to create another parking space (possibly 2).

It appears that between the pavement and our garden there is a metre wide strip of land that is owned by Redrow. Redrow built a housing estate about 10 years ago and this strip is at the entrance of the estate. Obviously there's no potential for further builds, does anyone have any experience of housing developers and if they'd be likely to sell it to us?

And how would I even begin to approach them to buy it?

I would just phone them but is it possible they have kept this strip so as to not let people extend / build / parking over that strip . I would just phone them or council and ask what the rules are and if you can 1) do a dropped kerb - not always allowed to & then2 ) find out if you can buy the strip.

Sorry not to be more help.

Thanks, I've asked the council to consider whether they would do the drop kerb if I can get the land. The council process seems easy enough and obviously wouldn't want to buy the land if I couldn't get the drop kerb.

It's called a ransom strip. They may well sell to you, but probably over the odds as it only has value to you. I'd really see if you can do what you want before you buy if possible.

Thanks - I thought a ransom strip was the other way around? If the price is too high I'll just leave it and park on the road. The stakes aren't too high from my point of view.
