Chertsey or Sunbury? What's best?

Me and my husband are thinking of relocating to either chertsey or Sunbury (close to the station).

We have seen a few houses but wanted to know about schools and your opinion about the 2 areas.

We would like to know more about each one and which you would advise to move to.

Thanks!

Chertsey High is the best secondary in the area I believe (on paper), unless you are Catholic, in which case look at Salesian/St Paul’s. Sunbury doesn’t really have a high street as such, there’s a few restaurants and little shops near the river but otherwise your shops are at Sunbury Cross which isn’t nice. Chertsey is more of a proper town.

I agree with the previous poster. Only move to Sunbury if you are Catholic, as those religious schools (both primary and secondary) are excellent. The "high street" in Sunbury is abysmal, previous poster was being far too kind.

I can't comment on the Chertsey schools, however it's a far nicer area. More leafy and green, plus close to the river. The nicer parts of Chertsey will be more expensive than the nicer parts of Sunbury, so your budget may push you one way or the other.

I agree with other posters, Sunbury is a bit nothing-y. Parts of it by the river are quite nice but it’s very quiet and it doesn’t have much of an identity of its own.

Chertsey is a bit better, it has some nicer pockets but a lot of it is quite run down and parts of it are rough. The areas by the river are lovely but pricey. It’s well connected for the M25. Re secondary schools - yes, Chertsey High has a good reputation so far but is a relatively new school. The catchment is narrowing year on year so no guarantee of getting a place. The other secondary options are Fulbrook which is good but a bit of a trek, or Jubilee High in Addlestone which is pretty dreadful. If you’re Catholic then Salesian School is excellent.

For primary there are some good options - St Anne’s if you’re Catholic, Pyrcroft or Stepgates if not.

Chertsey town isn’t particularly exciting but has a couple of nice restaurants and pubs. Train to Waterloo is slow (over an hour) but you can change at Virginia Water and catch a faster one. Windsor Great Park and Virginia Water are close by.

Thanks everyone! This is really helpful.

We are actually more keen to move to Chertsey, but we were afraid to leave London as it is much smaller town.

We loved Sunbury's the area near the river, but it doesn't seem to have much around (like supermarkets).
