In middle of extension. Will be kitchen diner about 5 x 7 meters. Kitchen at one end, dining table and a sofa at the other end. Island in the kitchen bit.

I've got to show the electrician where I want the lights. There will be a pendant light over island. How many spots do I need around the kitchen and diner and what positions? Round the edges? In the middle? It's frazzling my brain!

Please show me pictures of your ceiling spot lights!

The spots should be in the places where you want/need the light to shine, i.e. over the middle of your work tops/sink/preparation area, rather than laid out in a grid (easy for the electricians to set out, but not necessarily helpful if you're always standing in your own light). Think about whether you want them fixed (directly down) or angled. We have some that are angled to shine onto the table, but not directly overhead, also one in the ceiling which is angled to shine onto a big clock on the wall. All ours are dimmable which I like the option of, although the LED dimmable bulbs are pricey. We have 4 lighting circuits in the kitchen/diner - kitchen prep, ambient, dining/sofa spots and dining overhead. The 'ambient' lighting circuit has LED strips under the counter, on top of a big run of counters, under the breakfast bar, and a couple of wall lights. It's nicely atmospheric if you're not actually cooking.

There are spotlight calculators on line which may help. Don't have them too close together or too close to edge or they cast shadows. My kitchen is about 8x3. It has a dining table light, 13 spots and 3 pendant lights over breakfast bar. As pp has said, think about circuits. We have kitchen spots on one, dining spots on another, dining table light on a third and breakfast bar on final one. Also think about the order you want your switch to go. Good luck!
