Media wall cost and is it worth it?

Hello All,

Looking to get a 'media wall' to house a tv, inset electric fireplace and floating shelves in the alcoves. We have a chimney breast which we have plastered recently so would be looking to build media wall on top with studs and MDF.

Similar to this: images.app.goo.gl/3iLZfrx1UDZyxvoA8

Any ideas on how much it would cost? Any experience from anyone who has one? (Positive and negative please).

Thanks in advance everyone x

Don't box your TV in because the speakers are on the back, so you are going to need to use a sound bar or speakers in the walls and ceiling.

TV shapes change, generally getting bigger but we might get some with integrated speakers again like sky glass. Trying to fit any existing whole is a pain. Electronics are supposed to have airflow to prevent over heating too.

I hate tvs mounted high above a fireplace due to the viewing angle. Fire heat shouldn't be under flammable, meltable plastic TVs really.

Hidden wires are nice though. Try to hard wire the smart tele to your broadband hub with an ethernet cable instead of the WiFi, it is more reliable. Ensure access to hdmi connections for consoles or new dongles when the smart TV is no longer supported.

Very interesting points. Id never considered where the tv speakers were. Ive seen some options where the fireplace is inset but the tv isnt so maybe thats an option. We were hoping to place fireplace quite low down and TV as eye level as we could.

I was going to do a similar build, but instead (very expensive and a pain to replace TV/fix problems) I bought a Samsung Frame TV. It is so flat it literally looks like a painting or picture not a TV.

When I have a picture displayed (feature of the TV), I've actually had people ask me where my TV is haha.

How much were you quoted? Had a few people come and take measurements but no one quoted yet.

Following with interest as I’m thinking of doing this too. Are there specialist companies that do this? I don’t know where to start!

Had a TV about the far up a wall before and it was awful watching at such an angle. Not a small lounge either.

Ive put an ad for a joiner/carpenter on ratedpeople and had a few people come round. As to PP I too don't want to angle my neck either and was thinking of having the fireplace as close to the ground as poss and the tv as close to eye level as poss. Would that look strange?

Thanks Sum2021. I hope it doesn’t look strange as that’s exactly what I’m planning! DH is already making grumpy noises about neck strain so it needs to be as low as possible.

We have a TV above the fire and it's not too high, but the fire is min level to the floor.

You have to have concrete board to protect the TV from the heat and a min distance. You also need so many MM around the TV and a sound bar.

Weirdlynormal · 19/10/2021 08:52

The depth into the wall was also 150mm so you would need a dummy chimney or would lose a lot of the room

Looking to do a media wall with shelves at both sides!!! Any idea of a cost for this?

I found some people in London via Instagram and they are charging about £2-3000 for it. I’ve attached some pics - unsure if this is what you’re looking for but if so might be worth contacting them! I can only post 3 pics per post so apologies if I get annoying! Including the packages they offer

About £2,500 but it depends on how you do it and the materials you choose.

Here’s their contact information. They are based in Manchester and travel around UK. I think for London they charge an additional £3-400 as travel charge.
