Talk to me about shower curtains around freestanding bath

I just had offer accepted on a little Victorian house that needs everything doing. The bathroom is decent size and I would love to have a freestanding bath (it’s a dream). However I shower most days and I’m thinking about putting shower curtains on a suspended rail - does anyone have this? Is it claustrophobic? Another option is to have freestanding-ish bath that fits in a corner and shower screen but it takes away somewhat from the romance I imagined.
There is room to put a separate shower cubicle further down the line but I’m trying to just do the basics to begin with as the money will need to stretch to cover a lot of things right now.

I have had both those options previously. The shower curtain spoils the look of a freestanding bath completely. If you have the freestanding bath in the corner with a shower screen it makes cleaning around the bath almost impossible. A freestanding bath looks best when there is space all around it and you have a separate shower cubicle. If it's something you really want maybe you can prioritise the separate shower over another thing in the house.

Ah I haven’t thought about cleaning, that’s a good point @HanSB. I just intended to replace the built in bath that is currently in a corner with a rolltop one. Aren’t they usually in a corner? Or people leave a bit of space around?

You can get a free standing bath that has a shower screen. It won't cure the cleaning issue but could possibly solve your shower curtain dilema.

Sorry clearly did not read your OP correctly! Yes you can have one with a shower screen as you know. My friend had a double ended fully freestanding bath with a shower rail/curtain that was a kind of an elongated oval shape. It did stick to you a bit when you were showering but when it was in bath mode it was just kind of tucked behind the bath and it was fine. I say go for it if it's your dream.

We have a curtain and I think in prefer it to a screen. Pop in the wash. No limescale

Mines from Anthropologie and is beautiful. It has a polyester inner curtain. I’m thinking of getting some more beautiful fabric to make another, it just needs hemming and button holes along the top. You could have any fabric you liked.

We have a freestanding bath with an all around curtain. It’s not claustrophobic and it doesn’t stick but PP is right, it doesn’t look nice at all (and it’s such a lovely bath). I wouldn’t have the same again. But as a stopgap it’s ok.

We had that in our last house. No issues whatsoever. Take the curtain down every now and then and bung it in the washing machine with a towel, that helps it get clean. If you've left it to long to clean and can't get the mildew marks out, spray bleach on, leave 30 mins, rinse off. Easy peasy.

I’m not worried about the curtain per se, we have one for the shower in our current house and it’s absolutely fine, I put it in the wash once a month and it looks as good as new.
I was more worried about it sticking to me while showering and being enclosed in drapes all around.

Please don't it will look horrendous. Is there no space for a separate shower?

There is, but I’m not sure I can afford to do both straight away.

If the room is very large - what do you think of the trend for creating a fully tiled wet room where there are glass doors, shower mounted on wall, bath beyond the shower area. If I can find a picture I will post a link but it doesn't always work for me on app.

What you want is called a horsetrack shower rail.

You need two shower curtains.
You either position the shower above the taps at the foot of the bath with a round track or you position the shower in the middle of the bath with the bath taps in the middle of the bath and have an oval shower rail.

I have had this configuration for over 20 years with no problem.

@MenaiMna Yes I have considered briefly, it's not a mega large room, but it's OK sized for a bathroom in an average terrace. I think there would be room to have this, but it needs special waterproofing for tiles, careful sloping for the floor to make sure the water drains etc and I think it would make the final bill higher than just having a separate freestanding bath and a shower.

Do the shower first, and then put in the free standing bath when you can afford it.

if you wet the sides of the bath first then the shower curtain will stick to the bath and not waft about.
I cannot be doing with screens, they are never tall enough, or long enough.....although I really liked the ones you used to see in American sitcoms (and the like) full height and length along the bath, no gaps for draughts or leaking!

I wouldn't.
Used one in a hotel and the draught caused by the shower kept making the curtain move inwards and stick to my body. Really irritating!

Beware the fully tiled wet room if you ever want to change the decor. My house has a fully tiled (although not wet room) bathroom and I am sick to death of it and would love to change the look/colours, but without stripping off all the tiles at very great expense, I am left with 'paint the tiles', which won't cut it. Or I can gussy up the ceiling, which is the only space I'm left with (not going to).
