letterbox is too small

The letterbox in our Edwardian door is too small. A4 letters barely fit. We are considering getting an external box - can Mumsnet suggest something clever please?

Could you not enlarge the opening and get a bigger plate/flap? That's what we did in our Victorian door in similar circumstances

I don't want to mess with the door - seems a shame to start cutting it?

As long as you are not interfering with the panelling I'd just enlarge the opening. Even if original it's not fit for purpose and I wouldn't want an external post box which could get tampered with.

Definitely just enlarge it - An external mailbox is a right pain.

Agree with PPs - if you can, enlarge the slot in the door. If you're definitely keen to get an external postbox, also consider sealing the slot in the door, this would improve the security.

We've had to opt for an extenal postbox due to an over-enthusiastic dog Blush. We have this one (but they have a few different styles), which comfortably fits A4 brochures and magazines.

I wouldn’t enlarge it in a period door, definitely not.

The above poster’s box it lovely.

External letter boxes are a pain in the arse. We have one that was here when we moved in this year and the door is getting replaced with a door with a letterbox in the next few weeks! Post gets damp in the external letter box, you have to remember to check it every day, you don't know when post has arrived etc........ also if you go on holiday for 2 weeks post can pile up in the external letter box where as in the door at least no one can see it.

Make the letter box bigger in your door.

I hear what you're all saying about the external one. My preference is to not have one either, especially when we're still largely WFH. I love the look of PP's above, but it'd be better if it fit more. Maybe I just need to get my own postbox!!

Another one saying don’t have an external post box. I moved house a few months ago and removed the external post box within the first few days as I found it so annoying. And that was in decent weather…
