If you have a 20ft living room…

How is it laid out? (Or any other long living space).

Struggling to get a good layout for ours. It has a door in the middle and fireplace opposite. Windows at either end, south facing so gets lots of light.

We have a separate dining room and kitchen diner already so don’t need any dining space, but I would like to incorporate space for a ‘reading’ zone. We have some sofas but probably going to change them so not restricted by these. Also no DCs yet so don’t need space for toys etc.

Any ideas/diagrams/pictures would be amazing for inspiration!

Mine was 24ft x 12ft and it felt too long.
Patio doors one end, window at the other & double doors to the hall along one wall off centre towards the window (front) end and fireplace central on the opposite wall.

I had a 2 seater sofa along the short wall in front of the window, but pulled forward leaving about 5ft of space behind which had bookcase, dcs toys, a toy shop area etc.
Then tv in the corner of the fireplace/patio doorways.
3 seater sofa offset against the other corner/long wall and a single chair next to that before the doors.

Same furniture came from previous house with a similar shape but smaller lounge, probably 10ft x 17ft.
In that the 2 seater was under the front window, the chair was in the patio door/long wall corner and the 3 seater was along the long wall next to it facing the hall door.

Green is tv and fireplace along wall.
Purple are sofas.

Hmm I don't think my drawings or scale are very good!

I've since had a small extension on the larger room, taking 7ft reducing it to 12ft x 17ft (and adding a bit more on to the 7tf) which is a much better proportioned room and now have different furniture as pictured.

My DB has a similar sized living room. He had the larger setter about three quarter the way along the living room (not against the wall but going across the room)and behind it has a created a sort of chilled sitting zone that faces in the other direction to the rest of the seating. It works really well.

Ours is 24 by 11 with patio doors at one end. That half of the room has the stove, comfy seating and tv, the other half has a circular dining table, a dresser and two huge bookcases. We have a kitchen diner, but the table in the sitting room is more intimate, especially in the winter, so we use it occasionally. It is also useful for many other things, like wrapping presents, doing jigsaws etc.

23 x 12, patient doors on one side and fireplace on the other, but not directly opposite each other. Layout is like this....

Cruiser11 · 01/10/2021 19:43

Ours is long with patio doors to the garden at the top of the picture. We had a corner sofa when we moved in so we’ve effectively use it to section off that end of the room, the other end which narrows slightly has a side table and a few bits in it but it’s still a big space that is not really being used. I think traditionally that end would have been for a dining table but there’s a big extension to the kitchen so the dining table is in there.

@Cruiser11 no because I sit at the far end with my feet up on the sofa out in front of me.

I know what you mean though, our children are small so we don't watch a lot of tv all together, and if we do they tend to snuggle in between our legs. We might have to change the layout when they are older though.

canichange your room looks so cozy and inviting.

canichange · 01/10/2021 20:12

The owners before us had it like this. They had four teenagers/young adults, so they needed much more sitting space. We quite like our current layout as it means the tv isn't the focal point, but it might have to change one day.

Thank you @Cruiser11. It's a lot more cluttered and chaotic than the photos from the sales details, but that's pretty much our lifestyle!

I'd have sofas facing each other either side of fireplace, as if the door is opposite the fireplace putting a sofa facing the fire will act as a brake to the flow entering the room. At the biggest or brightest window end a couple chairs and table for a reading nook or more intimate chatting area. On the other end I'd put an amazing artwork and no furniture, or some sort of display built in for books and stuff.
Is the TV in this room?
