Estate agent didn't pass our offer on

So this is in relation to a rental property, that was up with a high end agent. The agent was snobby on the viewing and almost disdainful about us viewing the property (we would pass all financial checks).

We put in an application to rent the property but the landlord chose someone else. That's how it goes sometimes, so we moved on.

Anyways, as it happened, we got chatting to an old friend of ours who mentioned their father in law owned a flat in the area we were looking, and was renting it out shortly. She text her father in law about it, but turns out he had already rented the property a while back. It turned out. that it was the very flat that we had put in an offer to rent! But, he claims that the estate agent didn't tell him about our offer, and only mentioned the other three offers!

Now obviously he would say this, but apparently he said that from what his d-i-l told him about us, that we would have been perfect. The only real difference between us and the other couples was our background and age. I did think it strange that the estate agent asked us our age during the viewing.

Isn’t that illegal?

@poowee

Isn’t that illegal?
It is with sales I don’t think it is with lettings. If they had higher offers there may have been no point?

Are you young? Rentals are scarce where my son lives and we were told that as he is a teenager landlords would not accept him (I was going to be the one paying the rent).

What is your background and age, that you feel you've been discriminated on?
You're hardly aware of the background of the other people who'd applied, so assuming discrimination is a bit OTT. The one who it's been let to was probably in a far stronger position financially.

We are late twenties. And yes, we are aware of the other people who applied by speaking to friend's FIL (obviously he couldnt give the minutiae, but an overall picture from HIS point of view)

Ah, ok. Did he by any chance give certain criteria for the agent to filter on? Age could well have been one of them, despite what he later said to your friend.
It's a shame for you, are you now sorted elsewhere?
