Wiltshire Vs Cornwall

Hi I have been living in the countryside near pewsey wilts for a little time and quite like it but it does get cold out in the wilds. I keep looking at Cornwall as my next move somewhere like st Hilary looks nice but wonder if it's a bit remote. I have no family and don't work and I'm used to driving to the nearest shop 5 miles. Would there be a lot of differences for me as far as weather?does it rain more? Will it be any warmer? In the wilds of st Hilary up to where I am now near pewsey. Thanks

Yes I think by most comments that Cornwall isn't the place to run to definitely not! I really appreciate the honesty here about what it's really like living in your county wherever you are! And get some general agreements about what it's really really like in your neck of the woods.

But I remind myself that devizes isn't so bad every week when I have to back to Camberley to visit her in a sheltered complex. To me Camberley is a town that has been totally carved up as a race track for the people there to be more aggressive you have constant 3 into 2 lanes where everyone tries to outdo each other leading to very aggressive driving behaviour. I roll in there from the sticks and it's like a madhouse coming from the countryside where we have no named Franchised hypermarkets in devizes little market town no one wants to come here preferring the chav military towns that surround it. And when I come back driving across sailbury plains I've calmed down completely and thank God devizes doesn't have any hypermarkets or any of that rubbish. Hopefully it never will

Cornwall is now anything like £100.000 more than where I live now wetter, possibly more narrow minded, harder to see my mum, more isolated. I came to the conclusion that it wasn't for me.

Had you thought about going to corsham OP, near you but nice arts centre and lots going on and lovely high st. I don't actually find it grim. We lived in Bath but used to go quite often as it had a fab butchers.

Same applies to Frome- again a good arts centre, fab market and lots going on

I would also say maybe Salisbury .

I agree with you about Cornwall- for me there are too many downsides including it being a fag to get anywhere else, it's not cheap and whilst lovely when the weathers great , for me that wouldn't trump the negative aspects of living there, rather than a holiday

All I can relate wiltshire to is if you want anything done like fix your car is like "straw dogs" film I saw in the mid 70s. Like no one wants to help you and they don't know anything about the problem you got and they ask you always which village you come from? Is usually the first question.

What is a a named franchised hypermarket? Devizes has a Morrisons, a Sainsbury's, a Lidl and a M&S Food Hall

And which chav military towns is it that bother you? Tidworth is the only real Army town i'd have thought and that's 20 miles away from Devizes.

Do you think people might be making conversation when they ask you where you've come from?

Wiltshire is a truly vile county. Its full of extreme far right supporters many of them ex army. The local have a huge amount of inbreeding. The local council are all corrupt as is the county council. It goes back 200 year to the Rotten Burroughs and it hasnt changed. We lived in Wiltshire Calne for 10 years and hate the town and county. Its not called a True Blue county for nothing. Dont ever move there.

I wouldn't say Bradford on Avon is horrid ( it's 8 mikes from us in Bath) nor Salisbury- or even Devizes -we often pop to these - but I agree vast amounts of it isn't what I would pick- I don't deny though it isn't exactly a hot bed of bohemian, liberal people.

Well the comments about Wiltshire being vile made me laugh. Just seen that this is a zombie thread but now I'm here I'll say I love living in Wiltshire, my only gripe is that it's too far from the coast. I'm definitely not true blue though I'll admit many of my mainly elderly neighbours probably are.

Crikeyalmighty · 19/11/2023 19:40

@fussychica Yep , weird thread- it's got some places I wouldn't pick but some lovely places too - same as any county
