Kitchen Tile Makeover Hell

Putting this out to the wise Mumsnetters for inspiration.

I'm trying to disguise this awful central band of textured tiles in various brown shades of mock wood. The outer, cream marble style large tiles I can live with for now.

Just painted over a patch with special paint but it's a tad yellowy and sheer and some of the brown awfulness comes through.

Should I adjust the shade of the paint to match the outer tiles better and do another coat? I had planned to stencil random tiles with a tiny Moroccan patterned stamp in greyish blue and olive grey green. The rest of the house has a Moroccan feel.

What would you do?

I think the paint job looks pretty rough but the kitchen is pretty empty atm.

Previous owners spent some money on it and it will have to do for now. I think I will likely paint the cabinets too, in greyish teal or light sage green.

From my tile painting experience it takes a lot of thin coats rollered on with a gloss roller to get a decent finish. If you like the colour paint you've picked to cover the tiles then personally I'd just persevere. I've also wallpapered over tiles and used sticky patterned vinyl over them. Both faster and easier than the dreaded tile paint... 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

Thanks @Teaandcakeordeath83 - I have seen that new peel and stick film stuff. It's the same sort of stuff they "wrap" cars in, so it's really durable. I had thought of that but ruled it out due to the bloody bumpy texture of my tiles!

Id take them off and replace with something you like. Tiling is relatively easy especially if wall is flat and it's a uniform shape.

I agree. Was about to post exactly the same.

You should be able to carefully remove just the 'feature' tiles and replace with something else that you do like.

What brand of tile paint are you using? I bought a pretty mainstream one and it went on thin and bubbly, switched to a Ronseal one and put it on with a small gloss roller and only needed one coat.

I had same issue with first coat of tile paint (white over very dark green) but second coat made a big difference. After the second coat, we were happy enough as the faint variations in colour depth kind of offset the repeat pattern of the cheap fake handmade tiles. But definitely 3-4 coats needed to change colour from dark to light. The roller left bits of foam??? dissolved in solvent and I got wall panels from ikea to put on top.. Two years later still can’t be bothered.When you have tiles that awful, mediocre seems good so advise wait and see if you can live with the result of your paint job.
