What is like living in St Marychurch / Babbacombe / Torquay

I spent many very happy years of my childhood living in St Marychurch near to Babbacombe.

However that was 50+ years ago.

I am now considering returning to retire in the area and wonder what it is like living there now.

I am wondering if there are any MN’ers living there who could advise me warts and all.

My memories are of sun filled days, open top buses, beaches and ice creams, but visits over the years have helped me acquire a more adult view.

However, this will be a massive move for me, half way across the country, leaving behind family and friends. I just want to understand what I would be moving too and to get it right.

It’s changed a lot Torquay used to be lovely about 30 years ago, was exactly as you described but now it feels very down at heel and hen party central. If I had to live in Torbay I would pick Brixham , if I was moving to South Devon I would pick the South Hams, Dartmouth, Totnes but they are far more expensive. If you do pick Torquay you have definitely chosen the better part and you get a lot of property for your money compared to the South Hams but it wouldn’t be my choice to live there.

I live in torquay, and I am doing everything I can to move away from here tbh. Babbacombe and St Marychurch are the nice parts of torquay, but it is still very run down. Not somewhere I would move across the country for.tbh.

The only thing is some of the houses are very small in Babbacombe!
